Canadian taxes are very slightly higher than California (the top federal income tax rate is actually lower), however players are paid in American dollars which trades 25-35% higher than the Canadian dollar, which more than offsets any perceived tax disadvantage in Toronto, as well as accounting procedures designed to level the playing field. I agree he isn't coming to Toronto, because the Dodgers can easily repeat as champions which makes them the obvious choice. Also your theory makes no sense. The Jays were already "in" on Ohtani, Soto, Burnes, Fried, Snell, etc., who are all bigger names than Sasaki. Being "in" on Sasaki despite knowing he's signing elsewhere only damages the Jays reputation further, it doesn't help them. They're only making an offer because they believe he could sign here. Again, they were in on literally every big name FA out there, losing on Sasaki too makes them look even worse. Pretty stupid theory imo.

Robbie Ray, Yusei Kikuchi… Pete Walker is a beast pitching coach. Roki more than likely will sign with the Dodgers. But, these narratives as to why he won’t sign with the Jays seem a little weird. I don’t think Kikuchi would be telling him the Jays staff can’t develop guys. Especially since they’ve just recently poured tens and tens of millions of dollars into new development facilities
@yo2trader5397 күн бұрын
Didn't the Blue Jays trade Kikuchi to the Astros? Kikuchi has spoken highly of the Astros pitching staff in Japanese social media, but not a whole lot about the Blue Jays.

$5 million in advertising from TD, $5 milly from Shoppers, $$5 milly from Tim Hortons, $5 milly from Canadian Tire, and $5 million from Intact, plus $5 million from the club sounds like about 30 million reasons why he might be a Blue Jay to me.
@adamb12297 күн бұрын
You’re absolutely out to lunch on the advertising thing. There are simply marketing opportunities in Canada that do not exist in any other market. From day one. I don’t think American fans realize how much advertising money there is here for Blue Jays players. There is zero chance a guy like Roki could get a huge advertising campaign for something like bread or Campbell’s soup in the U.S. But, you bet your bottom dollar if this guy were to sign with the Jays… he’d having freaking national bread and soup commercials. Billboards from Halifax to Vancouver. There are downsides, many, team was crap, farm system is crap, management 😬. But at the end of the day the ownership group has a market cap of like $23 billion. It’s the largest market in the sport. Both in terms of having an entire country. But also the biggest metropolis by a mile with only a single ball club. So much so… that by the time Roki’s career is done it is very likely Toronto and the Greater Golen Horseshoe area will have surpassed LA in population. Imagine if the Dodgers were quite literally the only team in California…… that’s basically the Blue Jays, or at least the potential. That’s what they are selling him on. Big picture! Hell, these teams could have a new stadium by the time his career is through for all he knows(that might even be part of their pitch)

Omg another ignorant AMERICAN TAKE LOLOL. Clearly you have no idea who Rogers is and the power they have. Imagine the Japanese market corned by the MEDIA MOGUL in Canada. The toronto deal would be about Business and marketing. Roki will never be the face of endorsements with the dodgers. Te behind the scenes potential dollars for Rogers and Roki being the face of that are massive and most people are completely missing that. Your arguement about taxes is ignorant. And again you just dont understand who Rogers is. Do some research before posting a video...but 18 thumbs up kinda sums this up ... 600 plus views too lol. If Roki wants to win he goes to the dodgers...if he wants to be with a mentor he goes to the padres...however if this is a business decision, the potential of Canada and Rogers are the easy choice. There will be millions of dollars in media deals between Japan and Sportsnet (Rogers)..and if you think Roki wouldnt be getting a piece of this then your missing it. Ultimately there is a crazy amount of money here that NO US MLB team can offer..and the reason is you dont have your bigged MEDIA outlet owning a team..its all state based. So this is a complicated topic that goes beyond a simple discussion.

West Coast teams will always have an advantage for Asian players, but your video did a great job detailing how the Dodgers, in particular, have built a presence in Asian markets as early players in scouting baseball talent in the region. I'm sure there will be many Ichiro fans among these players, but Seattle isn't in the contending position the Dodgers are in. Their biggest competition for this talent pool remains in their own division.

You are way off. His agent has made it clear that no decision will be made prior to the 20th. Which is the day he will return from Japan. He will visit 2-3 clubs between the 20-23 and make his decision on the 23rd. His agent already laid all this out
@jdsthird12 күн бұрын
His agent actually said they expect to sign by the 20th. The final day for IFA signings is the 23rd. I’m sure they want to give teams that don’t land him time to go ahead and sign other free agents. Doing it on the last day is too close to the deadline. So look for the decision and announcement between the 15th and 20th at the latest.
@johndurrer786912 күн бұрын
@ His agent clearly said that he’s not returning to the states until the 20th. How is he supposed to visit multiple clubs if his decision is going to be made on the 20th? Sounds like he has already decided his team, and the only city he has visited is Los Angeles.
@jdsthird12 күн бұрын
@ He met in person with other teams at his agents offices in LA. It’s possible the visits took place this week and we didn’t know. He went to Japan for the holidays. There is no way they’d wait until the 23rd leaving all these teams to scramble on the last day to sign the International Free Agents. I suspect this is why Joel Wolfe said no later than the 20th. And the 15th is the first day they can sign. I also suspect the team already knows. This wouldn’t be tampering because his window opened to negotiate with teams when he was posted back in December. It’s just the signing period that has a window of Jan 15 thru Jan 23.
@johndurrer786912 күн бұрын
@ what do you mean by scrambling? The vast majority of international free agents will be signed on the 15th not the 23rd. It’s sounding more and more like he has already picked the Dodgers. Surely if he was going to join a different team he would come back soon enough to make visits to their city. Dodgers got a very big advantage with his agent being based in LA, which allowed him to get comfortable there for the couple weeks he stayed. But like I said it’s possible that he does the visits between the 20th and the 23rd. But if he decides on the 20th it most likely will be with the Dodgers. Which makes sense considering the issues the Padres are facing right now. I can’t imagine why he would willingly want to sign up for that when he can join the best run organization in American sports
@jdsthird12 күн бұрын
@ Trust me his agent said the 20th. You can easily look this up and verify it. I’m not making it up. I have no reason to. I can’t see him coming to SD. It’s a hot mess here. Right now I’d say the Dodgers, Cubs, Giants, Mariners, Mets and Yankees in that order with the Dodgers about 65%. Wait to see.

I think one of the main competitive advantages the dodgers have is proximity to Asia. Asian players would rather take a 10 hour one way flight to LAX versus 13 hour flight to new York many times per year.
@MIKELIN813 күн бұрын
Unfail advantage? No, not unfair...earned for having the foresight to see that Japan is a hotbed of Baseball interest. The Dodgers have known this since the mid-60s, when Walter O'Malley would arrange post-season games in Japan for the Dodgers against Japan's best teams. The process goes back a lot longer than you say in this video.

All the complainers are simply showing their ignorance when they cite all the $$$ spent by the Dodgers as evidence that everything is being bought. They ignore, completely, all the drafting and player development that happens throughout the system - a system that has been consistently maintained through the years with considerable attention and care. Add in the excellent trades made over the years that brought players considered flops by their previous teams and "suddenly" became integral to winning with the Dodgers. It's not simply throwing $$$ at everything, there's actually a comprehensive plan in place. At every level the Dodgers are designed to win from top to bottom and to keep winning in the long run.
@bpach891913 күн бұрын
And Dodgers aren’t even the highest payroll. I haven’t seen anyone complain about the other teams spending more. They just want to cry about LA
