Oh my goodness Josh, you've just saved my life.!! First-time author, first attempt at DIY'ing my audiobook. Hours and hours of youtube research has me au fait now with ACX checks, etc, but I was completely stumped when I got that annoying reading "Noise floor too low". I've almost been in Technology-Tears at times!!! 😭😱 So, finding this was a godsend!! AND AND AND! the other effect was that doing it this way, nearly all of my lipsmacking mouth sounds disappeared! SO much easer to edit now. Thank you, thank you, thank you for sharing your hard-won expertise so freely!

Great video. I also don't understand the constant normalizing on other videos. 🤷‍♂️ But you need less bragging and put downs, it makes you sound arrogant

I see you haven't uploaded to this channel in a couple of years, but if you ever come back I'd love an update to this tutorial for Audacity's new compressor. It seems like it works completely differently with the same(?) settings (seems to make the loud parts quieter rather than the quiet parts louder), and now that "ratio" is no longer in the "2:1" style of format it feels a lot harder to understand all the settings and apply your video to it. Luckily the current version I have (3.7.0) still has "legacy compressor" which matches your video, but if they ever removed it (a possibility since it's now a "legacy" effect) it'd be rough to get the same results from your demonstration lol.

Good video. But unfortunately you forgot an import parameter, Level reduction. For people reading this, it determines the amount of attenuation after the threshold is reached. So setting very high, results in total silence. Setting it a lower. It does not slam shut, but still lets some sound through. -20dB is a good value but I recommend playing with it to keep it sounding natural.

Excellent tutorial! I used to work with Sound Forge years ago doing radio news and this is similar. I was kind of lost on Audacity before I watched. It's going to be cool to get into voiceover again. Thanks!

Too much preamble, and too little detail, such as monitoring and setting the record level. I had to quit and look for a more concise tutorial.

Just want to say for anyone later than me, you can get to the older Limiter and Compressor by going to Effect > Legacy and then choosing it from the menu.

Thanks for the great show and tell. I'm SO new to recording though I'm still having trouble. It seems that when I turn the gain knob past half way on my scarlet 2i4 it gets real trashy sounding. If I turn up the incoming mic volume to max on audacity it gives a similar high end clipping that you are talking about. If I make everything so that it comes in nice and clean it is SUPER quite and I have to modify the decibels after the recording. Maybe that is just the way it is, but since I'm so new my first thought is "this shouldn't be like this, I shouldn't have to manually alter this every recording, what do I need to set my standards to to achieve my end results after a simple effect > amplify option?

Making guided hypnosis rtacks. Turns out the at2020 captures *everything* really well. Now not only writing a hypnosis script, but also learning to edit the whistles and breaths etc away comes into play, lol. Thank you for sharing. Good explanation and easy to understand. Plus, very practical to play around and find the setting required.

Heya, fellow Josh here. I am a male and have a slightly higher voice than you do. For the Male EQ setting, what would you recommend changing to fit someone with a slightly higher voice. If it helps, I am considered a Tenor II in regards to my vocal range.
