Im sure a hot glue gun would seal box also a torch razor blade and vice grips will cut the tote. For some reason that one g.e tube of silcone is very strong but the other tube isnt and even takes longer to dry i suggest using another silcone

How expandable is this design? Would the same fan work for 2 filters of this size, or 4? Obviously the box would have to be larger, but would the same set up work for a larger area of filter?
@gordotek
@gordotek 11 күн бұрын
I doubt the recommended fan would support more than 2 filters but you could easily add a second fan for up to 4. I'm not convinced there is much value to going bigger to be honest. The most critical things are agar work and agar to grain or grain to grain transfers. Most commercial operations do NOT do spawning to substrate in a laminar flow, they do it in open air. So that means you can pretty much do EVERYTHING required for mycology with just this relatively small laminar flow box. Bigger just wastes space in your home, they are more difficult to move around, heavier, more expensive, etc.

MANY agar plates being sold are not sterile, especially the cheap ones, unfortuantely. I perfer glass versions that can be pressure cooked, so I know 100% they were sterile (polypropylene can also be pressure cooked, some people even use free condiment containers from fast food places). Other than that, make sure the laminar flow is properly tuned, 45 degree bend of long stem lighter, steady flame. If there is a problem you will usually see it in the form of shaky flame. Work toward the center of the flow, and as close to the filter as possible without touching it.

I must have used too big of a filter. I used the same tote and ac infinity fan, just a bigger filter, and I cannot obtain laminar flow. Doesn't even move a flame in front of it. Thinking I will have to add a second fan or reduce the size of my useable filter area.
@gordotek
@gordotek Ай бұрын
People have doubled the filter (using two) shown in this video and report that it works fine even with the same fan. Did you buy a really deep filter? That might be the issue. Are you sure your fan was installed so that it is pointing in the right direction? I remember hearing from one person that accidentally installed it backwards, haha.

My only concerns how do you replace the filter?
@gordotek
@gordotek Ай бұрын
The manufacturer says the filter has a 4000 hour life, which is probably a lifetime of use for just mycology work (remember you don't leave this thing on and running all the time). But yes if you had to replace it, it should be very easy to do so, the silicone sealant is like rubber cement, you can just pull the old filter off and scrape away the leftover sealant and put the new one in, takes about 10 minutes. Likewise the tote lid will still come off pretty easily if you pull on it hard enough.

I used to give prints to anyone that asked but I've been overwhelmed and can't keep up anymore, sent out more than 2,000 prints, so I had to cut back, but I STILL give free prints to all patrons at any tier (as little as $2 this basically just covers postage). I'm actually sending out two prints now to every patron, and they are arguably the best genetics in the known world. You can't be that. I just pay it forward and hope enough people will appreciate the content and stick around to make it worth doing. Also note there is a community chat now on both the patreon app and website and the GordoTEK chat has been super active with everyone helping each other out, great vibe.

Great build this is a way cheaper awesome way to do it, one question though why did you put the fan power cord inside the tote
@gordotek
@gordotek Ай бұрын
Didn't want the fan sticking way outside of the box, that would make the laminar flow box more vulnerable to damage and more awkward to store and carry around. Some people just drill a small hole in the side of the tote for the cord and then re-solder the wires but that seemed like a lot of extra work. There are no problems doing it the way I show.

question: if using a humidifier then you actually mist everything inside - even the pins/surface. When doing showbox tek you only mist the walls during the fruiting phase. confused.
@gordotek
@gordotek Ай бұрын
Different species have different watering/humidity requirements. For pans you pretty much need direct daily watering and tons of fresh air exchange. When growing in a tote with a lid on, the water can't really escape so you don't need as much watering. That said pans can also be grown in an unmodified tote with no humidifier.

If you feel a "strong breeze" you aren't doing it right. That will create turbulent air, with eddies, which contaminates your work, as explained in the video. Hundreds of people, maybe thousands now, have built this using my design and I've gotten only extremely positive feedback. I think maybe you don't understand what laminar flow for mycology should feel like, yes, you should barely feel it. If you did not use the recommended filter that could be the problem. I tested many filters before finding the ones that worked. Do the agar plate test shown in the video and that will either prove or disprove that you have a working laminar flow box.
