it's not bad in the wild hills - though downsides are potholed lanes, dependence on oil heating/off mains drainage septic tank, national park would prefer you lived in a sustainable village, wildlife eating all the veg, lost delivery drivers.... but yes, worth it overall!

I hear a massive difference in the dawn chorus. Even compared to the previous year it's much diminished. Same story in Poland where our Summer cottage is where even nesting boxes were empty this year. I don't think this is on the scale of the industrial revolution anymore. I fear downslope changes are going on as we speak.

Indeed, what is that VOLUME? Do turn it up! Wise words once again. The UK soundscape is still one of noisy birds in the late spring dawn. Sadly far fewer people are in tune with it and rarely take account of just how and why it is a tad bit different to those dawns of the 1960s (just before my time). In your recording I can at least identify the following birds, some of which are those you already mentioned. Blackbirds, Wrens, Pheasants, Great Tits, Chiffchaffs, Woodpigeons are all to be found in behind your narration. Best wishes, Tony.

Listening full stop would be useful if you ask me. It’s no good any of us talking to ourselves as things are always evolving. Listening especially to you and your wise words hidden amongst the birdsong comes highly recommended. Everything can be utilised in sync with nature if we let it. Best wishes, Tony.

It is indeed a plantation which can be turned into a forest by serious thinning out and the establishment or self-seeding of complementary species in the spaces. But the Forestry Commission plants Spruces densely so that the young trees must battle for light, whereby they grow tall and straight, which is good for all construction purposes (and lumber prices).

Young folk today are pummelled daily on social media with slick ads for shining materialistic junk, the production of all this unnecessary stuff is ultimately killing the planet. Education around food, the environment and sustainability should be part of the curriculum if things are ever going to improve.

Gosh, thanks for that, which the algorithm thought it right to cough up for me. Also thanks for the lovely Yorkshire landscape, nomen tuum est omen. To the content: Is it not a central feature of the human condition thar we must talk past each other? Is it not inevitable that, especially in youth, "birds of a feather flock together"? There is the artificial rivalry between two streetgangs, the potential rivalry between a streetgang and a group of Hipsters or the real rivalry between a Muslim worldview and that of an academic biologist, or indeed of both with a Catholic theologian such as myself? I may choose to tolerate a Humza Yousaf and his concepts of free speech/"blasphemy" or a Richard Dawkins and his godlessness, but I will never select such people to sit down with, and formulate values for a public constitution. Why? I have named in each case worldviews which are in total contradiction to my own: the "talking past each other" is very much preprogrammed. And just to increase the temperature in the "room": J.W. von Goethe said: "Dulden heißt beleidigen" - "toleration must entail an insult".
@robyorke84 ай бұрын
thanks for making me think about 'tolerance' - I suppose for me it's about creating space to tolerate alternative contested environmental narratives to help built resilience in diversity of thinking towards seeking bilateral/unpartisan solutions. This may involve disrupting minority activists to help inform the silent majority of environmental all-too-often 'wicked problems' and nuanced issues we seek to unravel. Examples might be meat consumption/land use and fossil-free energy generation in the Western world
@1258-Eckhart4 ай бұрын
@@robyorke8 But if you've already defined the field of action (here: environmental policy), then the diverse opinions are matters of degree. This is only the lowest stage of tolerance. It becomes much harder when the field of action cannot be agreed upon, usually because any action will run counter to one party's interests. They are in 180° opposition, but the respective positions must be tolerated (freedom of opinion). And at that point, remember Goethe: In merely tolerating the respective other, you are always implicitly excluding them from your field of action, a sort of insult (here: ostracism).
@robyorke84 ай бұрын
yes, Goethe's 'insulting ostracism' is currently running riot within the information/status powerplay of gatekeepers operating within a range of environment conversations. As a moderator, you can be perceived as a threat and disliked by most!

In response to the post 2nd world war regs and policies around food, what is the solution for creating more diversity in all areas of nature (agriculture, woodlands etc) how do we solve it? Is the solution to go back to post war natural Britain and how do we meet the food demands of the country ? I love nature and recently read a book called Wilding, about rewilding Britain. I loved the message and think more needs to be done to make Britain’s a more diverse land when it comes to nature

Follow the "payment" to become reliant on hand outs. Diminishing trading activities resulting in loss of APR and BPR, most definitely resulting in loss of farmhouse via IHT bill😂 Dear farmers, get a good agricultural accountant who cares and build a good relationship with your bank. Technology, diversification, investment, proactive tax advice and follow the lead of your European counterparts who have most definitely had enough of the incumbents targeting farmers over climate change and environmental legislation. We all need to do our bit but it's clear to me farmers are being too heavily targeted. And remember your land is an extremely valuable asset which makes certain entities in this world envious of you, especially incumbents in favour of property developers. The drive for concentration of land ownership is well underway in favour of food self-sufficiency.
@robyorke87 ай бұрын
thanks for response. Yes, good point re APR (Agric Property Relief) - this is a 'smoking gun' in how the govt enables farmers who are diversifying in part to becoming land managers to not fall foul of 'unintended' taxes - see this govt consultation www.gov.uk/government/consultations/taxation-of-environmental-land-management-and-ecosystem-service-markets I agree, land-based accountants should be closer to banks! My vlog is aimed at some farmers, thinking they can still produce food they >want< to (status quo), rather than the market >demands< (adapt), being wiped out by either efficient food producing farmers or absentee 'natural capital venturers'. as they say, adapt or die: I want them to adapt and stay in the farmhouse or at least in the community! I think you had a good reaction to your post, Rob, and entirely predictable, especially from some participants. Nuance. I'm starting to see this as a problem. Dive into a sufficient amount of nuance and the message becomes bland, uninteresting, unhelpful and pointless. A bit like answering every question with 'it depends". Creating some stir, upsetting some people perhaps, it's not always bad. Some need to get upset to start thinking. Keep up the great work, Rob.

Everything’s so bleeding urgent with everything and everybody that we lose the time to stay still for a moment and to listen. Solutions take time but ignore those with the solutions at our peril. A systems reset and mindset change is what’s needed most urgently and that can be accomplished alongside the people affected by it.
