Thank you Steve for featuring Tom and Jerry. It was my favourite cartoon to watch in the 70's and early 80's. I loved the slapstick humour, and even as a young viewer didn't think of emulating it on anyone or thing, it was just a cartoon. I prefer the earlier cartoons, and still find them funny today, I used to love the howl that Tom made when Jerry really hurt him! I viewed them with such an innocent mind, so any meesages about race or violence went right over my head, but as I became older realised that it was the attitudes at the time when the older cartoons were made. Thank you for creating this retrospective, it really has brought back some happy memories.👍🏻

No worries! 👍 I'm pretty much in agreement with everything you've said there. The very oldest cartoons (first run) are really the only ones I go back to as well, if I'm honest.

I imported the Golden Collection blu-ray from the US and was disappointed that volume 2 was cancelled. The best part it was all in chronological order, uncensored and the transfer was great. I wish they did this with Looney Tunes. I have their golden collection DVD’s which is great with many special features and being uncensored.

I used to have a lot of these types of old cartoon collections on VHS years ago, but like many people I binned all my VHS tapes when DVD came out. Feel like an idiot now.

The very first story featured on John Craven's Newsround back in 1972 was about violence in Tom and Jerry. In the intervening years, I can quite honestly say I've not once had the urge to flick a mouse off a piano.
@Gloryzuki10 сағат бұрын
CONTEXT - So, at one point, in 1972, a man started a campaign to end Tom and Jerry on the BBC, which was airing the cartoon series (since around the late 1960s), and, according to the interview on (John Craven's) Newsround, the only thing that stopped the campaign was because he was sent many "fan mail" (from children) telling him not to cancel the series.

Honestly I always thought I never knew the ladies name was mame two shoes never thought it was racist just thought she was the house owner
@RetroSpectivesКүн бұрын
When I watched the first episode all the way through recently, I felt she was portrayed more as the house owner than the home help. It's particularly noticeable in the episode where she's getting ready to go out with her friends.

Great video. I got Astro Wars for Christmas, must have been 1981/82. Absolutely loved it and played it to death. Was always envious of 'Invaders From Space' on school end-of-term game days though (I was an idiot and didn't realise how lucky I was). Bonus memory unlocked: I also had the yellow 'Mini Arcade' featured at the end of the Australian Advert, I think released here in the UK as 'Mini Munchman' Pac-Man clone.

Yes, Munchman I remember. I had a handheld/pocket version of pac man. They were dirt cheap at the time.

Great video I got Look-in all through the 1970s and have the 1977 annual, but according to research the annual you show in this video is the 1980 edition. The 1979 edition primarily had ABBA on the cover and was yellow in colour.
@RetroSpectives3 күн бұрын
It might be. The publishing date on the contents info page is 1979. Annuals for a particular year have always traditionally been released in the months leading up to the year on the cover. This edition oddly has no year on its cover.

No matter how hard they try they'll never beat the 80's for awesome tv shows, I stopped watching tv altogether after the mid 90's because they got rid of amazing tv shows and replaced them all with all this fake scripted reality TV B*LL*CKS! and what sickens me is most gullible people bought into it and swears it's all real! Shame on these corporate jackals who decided to do away with all the tv shows we loved only to replace them with fake scripted reality TV shows that people like myself couldn't give a sh*t about! 🙄😒👎

Good video, I remember Look-In from when I was a kid though I was only 4 in 1979, my older cousins used to get it and I did for while from the age of 6 or 7 and always loved the cover art. Just to say that it was tied in with ITV so all the shows featured were on that channel, and was when it was first published in 1971 was marketed as a junior TV Times, which was the tv listings magazine solely for ITV back then. I remember the Benny Hill cartoon strip, I was aware who he was and even I thought it was weird at the time that he was in it!
@RetroSpectives5 күн бұрын
I was five in 79, so similar experience. ALL my memories of this annual are because I remember the TV shows. The BBC did their own version of Look-In, (I think it might have been called Beeb, or something.) From memory now .. it only ran for a short while.

A walk down memory lane. I'm sure I had a Look in annual with Starskey and Hutch showing how to make an "authentic" American burger. One more absolutely crazy thing I remember from this mag was taking the posters and sticking them on boxes full of soil and using them for target practice with our air guns. If it was ABBA, Blondie or The Human League you got points for hitting the guys and lost points if you hit the girls. Imagine 10yr olds doing something like that on waste ground these days ? 😳
@RetroSpectives9 күн бұрын
I can't imagine modern ten year olds with air guns, but I can imagine them doing much worse, sadly. Good idea with the poster / mud boxes, btw.. 😆👍

I used to have a weekly subscription to Look in from 1975-79 or so. Loved it and looked forward to who was going to be the centre spread colour poster. Occasionally it would have a free gift on the cover. I remember some sort of Kung fu medallion in a 75 issue. Anything ABBA related I would swap with the kid across the road. Can't remember what I got in exchange though. Oh, happy days!

I used to get Look-in annuals for Christmas off my aunt, she was only 9 years older than me and was pretty cool. So I had them from 1978 to 1982. Unfortunately on both, the pages started separating from the spine, maybe the glue had deteriorated. I ended up throwing them away only a couple of years ago. Should have kept them! 😊
@RetroSpectives14 күн бұрын
You can probably see in the video, a couple of the pages have started to come loose on mine. If it ever gives out completely I might separate it out to scan it in as a PDF.

Show should've had a full season. I just got an e-bike around last month, and when I took it as far as Walmart (which is an extremely long distance from my house), the whole time I kept thinking I was Street Hawk. When I put the electric mode on 3 (fastest), I acted like it was hyperthrust! By the way, there are three different versions of the pilot episode. You can easily find all three here on YT. The OG pilot is my favorite, because it was longer, the beam was blue and didn't shoot straight like the red one, and there was even a streak effect at the start of hyperthrust! You'll see other differences too.
@RetroSpectives14 күн бұрын
Love it! 🤣👍 I have a push-along adult scooter. It's not quite the same, really. I'll try looking up those alternative pilots. Thanks for the heads-up.

Thank you for another fantastic video - informative, funny and thoroughly engaging. I may have only been nearly 3 by the time the '70s ended, but thanks to all the repeats of TV shows , the TV of that decade felt like my own (I was shocked when I later learnt that Bagpuss was made several years before I was even born). They've just been repeating Sapphire & Steel and Dick Turpin on Rewind TV, I think. This video also takes me back to all those great annuals in the '80s that I used to love. So glad I discovered your channel and look forward to your next video.

The overlap is interesting, how we remember TV from before our time. I think it's why I enjoyed this annual so much even though I would have been too young for it originally.
