Yes, I didn’t know about the sharing of bought patterns but creativity is not something that is really appreciated nowadays. People think that all drawings and pictures should be free to use and for example newspapers pay illustrators much less than they used to. It is sad.

Hi Anna, I just found you and I really enjoyed your podcast! Thank you for talking about the story with the discord sharing paid pattern illegally. While that makes me sad, it also doesn't surprise me. As your husband said, wherever there is a paid version you can be sure that ppl will share an illegal copy. It's the eternal struggle. And sometimes I have a feeling that some people take part in this just because they can or don't want to pay (not because they cannot afford it). Which I feel is doubly awful. I have a question about this actually. While I do by knitting patterns from designers, I sometimes come across patterns that are 6,7,8EUR and it's a really simple thing (like the sofie scarf just to name a very prominent one. I don't need a pattern for this, I can figure it out just by looking at it. Yet, I feel like this is an idea as well that someone worked on and I feel like I should give something in return, because I'm not that creative and am taking advantage of somebody elses idea. What do you think as a knitwear designer about this? Should you pay for a pattern if you can figure it out on your own - is that like an idea theft? I don't mean that you go and sell the things, just to make it and wear it yourself. Thank you for your input.

Hej Anna, I found your podcast yesterday and subscribed immediately, also for your newsletter 😻 I got to know about the discord stealing group via Liv Ulven, she has already made 2 Instagram posts about this topic with interesting discussions. When I started a knitting group a few years ago, I was asked for copies and got eyerolls when I declined. I’m a testknitter and I know how much work is packed in a pattern. And I made the experience that criminal intensions in the crafting area are more common than expected 😒 and as Liv (Woodlandsknits) was stating: it’s again women picking on women where instead we should support each other. F.e. petiteknit started small but has grown to a company with a staff she can pay salaries and they would be affected too 🙁 enough rambling 😏 I hope that you and other designers won’t stop creating gorgeous knitwear and still the good people are in majority 👍🏼 waving from Germany 👋🏼

I really like your designs, especially the first one. I am going to buy that pattern and I would never give it to anyone else! I think it is so nice that you have your great grandmother's sewing needles. I have things from my great grandmother too, like her silver thimble and her metal and wood knitting needles.

I love and appreciate all the little bits and pieces inherited from earlier generations of my family and my husband's family, that needle packet is adorable! Short needles can be really nice in fine sewing.

Betweens were used in quilting and allowed quick stitching and would go between the fabric and the batting.

Hello, Anna. It is theft, just like taking dress patterns that you bought from a fabric store, and having the pattern copied, and selling it yourself. They knew it was wrong, and illegal, and did it anyway. They've done is with music, books, and anything else that designers/writers have worked to create. The digital age has made it possible to copy the pattern, sometimes anonymously (without a mask and gun), since the expense of copying it is on the buyer, making it even less work for the re-seller of the pattern. They think of themselves like Robin Hood, letting people get things for less, but they are not stealing from big corporations (not that that process is legal).

I love fantasy and sci-fi and a recent discovery is Robin Hobb starting with Assassin’s apprentice, part one in the Farseer trilogy. There’s actually three trilogies but don’t let that scare you! Once you’ve fallen in love with Fitz and the Fool and of course the wolf Night eyes, you will just want more 😊

I recommend Ursula LeGuin’s fantasy books. Her worldbuilding is solid and her language is beautiful, and there are also plenty of relevant female characters, which is important to me (and lack of which really bothers me in Tolkien). Also I recommend Nnedi Okorafor’s Who fears death. If you want something cozy, maybe Diana Wynne-Jones’s books might be delightful. I enjoyed N.K.Jemisin and think she managed to create something completely new, but if you did not really like it that much, maybe move on to other books for now? Reading should be enjoyable and there are so many lovely books waiting for you!

I grew up reading the Narnia books in the 70s because my mom has always been a C.S. Lewis fan. The various series and movies are ok but never like the books! Same with LotR when I was older, it‘s my daughter (now 34) who is the big fan of both book & movies, also the whole HP craze was with her and I really like those, too. As a child I liked but was also freaked out a bit by The Silver Crown by Robert C.O‘Brien… 😱 Did you ever read the Wildwood books by Colin Meloy? I really liked the first one, in particular. While watching, I‘ve been knitting an Elvira angel by Leknit, a palate cleanser between socks and sweaters for Christmas! 😇

I'm really interested in your new sweater, as the first time I encountered Hillesvåg Sølje (also in a rust colour lol) I made a shawl with a similar kind of textured detail (Azzu's Shawl by Emma Fassio), possibly reversed with the yarnovers and garter st, but I am very much reminded of it! How interesting that you are inspired by the Alpine Krampus. There are so many versions of him, it's fascinating to me to compare Scandinavian folklore and Alpine folklore and cultures, it's becoming my pet hobby ;) Since I was a child I have loved wearing dirndl dresses (I am half German) and I still do, it feels great to wear them but where I live it has a rather negative connotation, so I don't wear mine very often, just sometimes at Christmas at home :( Maybe that is why I love seeing you, Sara Wallgren and Lina Odell wearing your wonderful clothes so much. And...one of my next projects is going to be an Islender using some Breton and some Ameland wools I want to combine <3 Good luck finishing Robin's sweater :)
