I remember pulling out of Pearl on a destroyer and our aft line (line 6) slipped back onto the bollard on the pier as we were moving. The line was still wrapped around the chock on the deck. That line ran through for a couple seconds then bit in. It got so tight the water was wringing out of it and it started humming from the strain. Us line handlers huddled behind the 5” gun mount. The line then began to run through the chock again at lightning speed. The bitter end jumped off the deck and bent the steel life rails on its way over the side. It was pretty hairy.

I was on the USS Peleliu LHA-5. Boatswains mate. When underway I was 4 hours on and 4 hours off. On the bridge, helm, lee helm, lookouts, messenger of the watch. When you're on the porch lookout you can see the harrier Jets and helicopters taking off and landing. Being on the bridge with them officers and knowing exactly what's going on. The best job I ever had.

Just one old sailor’s opinion, too much chatter, very slack looking bunch and the chief playing pocket pool should spend the rest of his truncated career counting toilet paper. Finally there should have been an immediate muster and that army of onlookers should have been controlled.

It beats me why they have manually operated chain brakes ? A hydraulic brake that’s operated from a console would be far more safer and way more effective.

Get a duck bill on that chain now!while on board the U.S.S.Durham in Pearl I was painting the anchor flukes , my fellow deckapes that were tending my safetyline , thought it would be amusing to remove the jacobs ladder , and diddy bop to somewhere else , needless to say I had to climb the anchor shaft to get back topside

It seemed odd how they kept spinning the brake wheel or whatever it is called. I can't imagine it would have taken that many rotations to free the anchor. Nobody else seemed to question what they were doing.
@joeordinary209 Жыл бұрын
Worked on deck and also as a navigator in the merchant navy. You always tried to release the chain in a controlled manner, as soon as it start to move you need to add some friction to control the speed. Obviously it depend on the situation and the depth, the deeper water the more risk for screw ups.....Never tested it but was told that if you let the chain go fully out in deep water( straight down), there is no windlass that can lift the whole chain and the anchor hanging straight down.

You know it's a military ship when everybody started yelling. Why is there so much free space that the end of the chain can hit the pillar like a whip? Why is that wheel not like a wormdrive that would block itself. What hat a stupid construction!
