I’m a junior in high school and I’ve been looking into this mos. Do you have any advice for someone looking into joining? What to read and learn before I join? Daily life of a bm? Stories? I’d enjoy any piece of knowledge you share.

Not a bm, but this is what I saw on a destroyer. When you first start out, you'll be doing a lot of busy work. You'll be doing TONS of preservation, which involves using air powered tools to remove rust, prime, and paint. Other things you'd be doing include maintenance and handling lines- and not just knots. you'd either be one the one pulling mooring a ship or directing other people to do it. While underway as a junior BM, the watch you stand is mundane. You'll be standing look out- rain or shine. There will be tons of drills and events that occur that will require your participation and at times it will be extremely taxing. As you move up through the ranks, you'll be the one directing other junior guys to do what you did before, plus the normal administrative stuff that everyone else in the navy do. Keep this in mind though, that advancing as a BM is tough. Less than 5% (and this is being extremely generous. it's usually more like 1%) of E-5s will advance to the next rank through evaluations and tests. Caveat is, most commands recognize this ridiculous advancement rate and if you're seriously an outstanding sailor that tries his/her best at everything, you may get meritoriously advanced. Bottom line is: BM is tough work, tough advancement, but it does seem the BMs are usually super tight with each other, so if the work sounds appealing for you or you're in need of making new friends... by all means pick it. This is my objective opinion of this "rate" (we don't call it MOS in the navy) from what i've observed. Lemme know if you want my personal opinion lmao.

@@noobrages USCG BMs are pretty much the same thing. Starting off as a Nonrate, we do busy work like painting the hull and super structure, wash-downs, rust removal, etc. I’m going through BM A-School right now and it’s not too difficult. The only thing stopping people from advancing from BM3 to BM2 is the Coxswain test, which covers navigational information, BECCES (maintenance drills/procedures for smallboat operations), and basic helmsman actions for proper operation. Can’t wait to get out of Yorktown and get behind the wheel and teach other NRs the BM ways LOL
