Short trap with fast door’s definitely get the job done, but I have missed an otter a time or 2 with my short cages. Your doors are exponentially faster then mine though
@JamesComstockCages10 күн бұрын
Our standard Beaver cages are 39 inches long, yes, with the powered double doors they really slam shut. Many, many otter caught in that model! Meant to be a swimthrough, not baited in the center.. that slows the animal down.

We have been making "positive" sets for 16 years now, baitless trapping that can't be beat. Caught 142 woodchucks this way one year, NO BAIT. The top trap is a positive set in this case, but always set on the ground. Man made rock walls are tough when the hole is halfway up the wall, so had to do something different. Not knowing if the chuck was in or out I put the "dirty" trap on the bottom which of course payed off. We usually rake the ground, place the trap in front of the hole on more level spots, then place the metal nose cone over the hole to join the trap and hole to become a unit which will take chucks coming or going, same for skunks. The metal cover will keep skunks from spraying also. No bait means no maintenance. It means few non-targetted catches as there is no attractant baits or lures. You just set and catch. As mentioned, I have not baited a woodchuck in 16 years and have been successful with the live traps 99.9% of the time, quickly. It's much better than a kill trap for percentages as well and not dangerous to kids and pets.

@@Silerlonewolf1970 I began trapping in 1965 which has now become Animal Damage Control for the past 30 plus years. I wasn't happy with existing equipment, so I invented a better live cage trap, patented, for many animals, from beaver to chipmunks. We offer our line of traps through comstockcustomcage.com. For woodchucks we also provide a 10 page write up with how to so that with a quick read you can duplicate what we do and literally become proficient in a matter of minutes. We have lots of DIY people. One local with a horse barn had caught one woodchuck in an entire year. I began setting traps when I got there, setting two traps and catching two woodchucks in minutes. I set 4 more traps and by early afternoon had caught all 6 of the woodchucks in his barn. He got a trap and now does it himself. Because we provide traps and want people to be successful we also provide the knowhow so that they will tell others. Our sales are word of mouth as we really do not advertise. We also do a lot of beaver work for state, county, town and private, having caught more than 2,000 beaver in the Comstock swim through beaver traps in just under 14 years.

New York State, like many other states, has lots of beaver issues with a policy not to transport and relocate. A live captured beaver must be dispatched. Just too many problems to keep shuffling them around to cause problems at another location. There are no lions or wolves to keep them in check only a few black bears. Most states have trapping seasons on them with restrictions, but Alabama has no restrictions, considered vermin due to the numbers and can be trapped or shot at any time. Again, no predators, while fur prices are always lower on southern beaver.

I just got one of your double door beaver/otter cages. ( i have to trap wa. State regs) And i am impressed! They are well balanced for carrying. And with some imagination in your sets, are very effective. Have got both beaver and otter. The power of the door springs gives you the ability to really bed/hide them well. A favorite otter tactic, when there is a sandy or soft dirt bank that's not sheer, you can set a mock slide, Make a kind of gaudy "slide" down to the waters edge, then dig a landing area, kind of like you would do for a traditional castor mound set, and place your cage, i like to bed it so the mesh is in the mud/sand doors down. Place your bait/lure, i like to place a fish top center with a bit of beaver castor, maybe a bit of shellfish oil. And then cover the trap and, to a slightly lesser extent the doors with dead grass, then cover the grass with sand or soil. You've Got the slide for long distance eye appeal, and the bait/lure to get them to commit. The trap looks exactly like a hole in the bank , one that has an exit. (Looking at otter level) It also doesn't look like a trap at all for 2 legged critters. The doors will power through the muck, and grass. This would probably work with the doors up. I just haven't tried it that way. So far, I've just used it as a swim through for beaver. It works. They dont seem to shy away from it. Compared to some of the bobcat cages I've used, it's easier to carry. Which might not seem like a big deal, but it is. Thanks for a quality product for those of us that live in restricted states.

The traps are 12 inches high and 18 inches wide. If you set the trap in 10 inches of water with two inches of air space at the top beavers can breath just fine, alive and well. You can set the traps sideways in 12 inches of water with 6 inches of air space, same thing, alive and well. You can also set the traps on land in dry sets, once more alive and well. They are using these traps to live trap and relocate beaver in Wyoming and Utah. The Comstock trap was on the T.V. show Dirty Jobs.

What’s the reason for putting the trap upside down?
@JamesComstockCages Жыл бұрын
Several reasons. Sometimes brush or sticks can be lying on the bottom, debris that you might not see if the water and bottom are dark. If the doors fire downward they could get hung on a stick you didn't see. When the doors fire upward they come through clear water free of brush etc. so they always close and lock. When a beaver swims through the trap and fires it his back feet are often over the doors. When the door with 20 pounds of pressure fires, it lifts the beaver up and forward pushing him into the trap, offering no chance for backing out because the surface he would brace against is the closing powered door. Additionally, when runs are deep, too deep to reach with hip boots, the cage can be tossed in upside down without firing. Even with this super stability the trap is still sensitive enough to catch muskrats. As of this morning up to 1,958 beaver in the Comstock cages.

@JamesComstockCages Жыл бұрын
The trigger wires are made to fall off after a catch is made to cut down on bending or breakage. They of course pop right back on and will last for many catches. There are no other components that can be damaged on these traps, pretty much unbreakable.
