Decades ago when I was learning pottery and digesting everything I could from Leach, Hamada, Cardew, and Casson and emulating them I pretty much dissed Caiger-Smith as being over decorated! Boy, what a young ass I was!! In the decades since I cultivated an appreciation for the more colorfully decorated Italian and Moroccan type pottery…. I should have paid much more closer attention to Caiger-Smith!!! I also love Mick Casson’s work! I worked very hard to learn how to pull handles on pitchers and mugs like he does!!

I'm watching this 13 years later and keep thinking, who filmed that and did he film more?

I worshipped Bernard Leach and Hamada when I was learning pottery in the late '70's!! I once made a Cornish pitcher after the style of Michael Cardew with his inscription (in Cornish) "Thou Noble Pot I Love Thee Well, In All The World Thee Hast No Equal" ❤

Yes my time as a studio potter back in the 80s and 90s was a fascinating! I loved it, as I equally love making music too.

Nice to see Alan Caiger Smith working. His use of a brush is very impressive.

What a lovely clip of a lovely man. I visited Wenford Bridge a few times with Michaels great niece and met both Seth & Ara, sadly Michael had passed many years before.

Hi I loved the video, I am making a book illustration about a potter, the drawing will depict a male potter, I'm using my imagination to build the details, but about the posture, I would like to use a pose I saw around the minute 4:34 in your video, I just wanted to make sure if it's ok with you and also if you wanted me to write it in the credits, if not I will just find something else to base the drawing posture. Thanks

*Finally, the function of the wheel itself is SMOOTH🎡>**share4.photo/1potterywheel?ЂБ ** From the slowest rotation to the highest speed, I found this wheel to function really well. The pedal/stick is very responsive. For throwing pieces under 5 pounds I assume it is ideal. I haven't tested it with anything over 3 pounds yet. The actual wheel head is small and for now a bit low for me (12.6 height of machine) but I will know more after I make improvements on height. As soon as I received the wheel I threw on it and was able to create just as I did on my old wheel that had broken. Nice!*

This is an excerpt from a Canadian Broadcasting Corporation episode of "Hand and Eye" called "Glorious Mud". The narrator was the late Robin Hopper. Michael Cardew died a year after this.
