Grey Scouts also used .22 Hornet bolt rifles since they could be fired one handed from horse back,and the shot would not be heard much outside of a short sreas. Plus the 45 grain tough little bullet would handle itself quite well. Also for foraging game for the pot, head ,neck shot on game would go rather good also

I`m curious and hoping someone here can inform me... What was the make up, role and what actions were taken by P.A.T.U (Police Anti-Terror Unit)? I ask because my uncle left me a brand new, still in plastic complete uniform with the P.A.T.U patch sewn on to the sleeves...his history is very murky (16 years British Army, moved to Rhodesia in 1970)... Any help would be much appreciated...

PATU was mainly made up by Farmers in the Countryside. Before ,they got called up and served all over Rhodesia. The idea was to keep them on the Farms and call them up in PATU Sticks who operated (patrols, ambushes) in the local area. Basicly they worked in the day time on the Farm and , mainly, at night on Patrols and ambushes. They were quite successful...they knew the area, were in touch with the local Povos (a Tobacoo Farm had up to 1500 Black Farmhands and Familymembers), had Bushcraftskills.....

One minor correction if I may. The operation that englobed Portuguese, Rhodesian and South African forces both in Angola and Mozambique was called Alcora not Dingo. South Africans however did not engage the guerrillas in combat, not until Portugal left Angola, they only provided helicopters for the Portuguese Air Force. The Rhodesians instead did fight alongside Portuguese troops both in Rhodesia and Mozambique.

I mean the rebels had more foreign support and the advantage of larger numbers. The Rhodesian army was highly effective with examples being Operation Dingo. In which Rhodesia lost a handful of men and the rebels lost 1.2 - 3 thousand men.

Rhodesia had very little equipment, it was frugal. Compared to USA in Afghanistan for 20 years loseing against men in skirts and sandals.
@General-History101
@General-History101 4 ай бұрын
@johnsmith-ht3sy it had little equipment because its force was small. It was indeed however effective because they were fighting on their own land against rebels that had been badly trained by inexperienced leaders. In my opinion, it was the lack of economic stability due to it being an outcast nation and the overwhelming casualties by the rebels that caused the loss of the war.
@simonnormand2813
@simonnormand2813 4 ай бұрын
The conclusion of the war was a political solution, brought about by Carter the farter and his handler, Kissinger. Even Mugabe knew he could not equal that army in the field. Equipment was not in short supply in regards to what was needed. But economic considerations were always important. So while the airforce was mainly used in the air landing roles, use of the fighters and bombers was restricted to external raid support. Casualties compared to our opponents were rather light, due to an emphasis on training
