So I first heard this song played by the Grateful Dead and I thought it was beautiful. Then I heard it performed by Bob Dylan and I thought, wow, even better, fantastic! And then I heard this rendition which resonates with circumspection and sincerity, the violin gently pulling at one's own heartstrings, evocative, lamentful and mournful and I thought "Holy cow! Every rendition of this song just keeps getting better, like magic, increasing in its appeal to infinity!"

"Every road you take leads to Bob Dylan". Chuck Prophet was right. I love his songs and I can't say which one is the best to my ears, they're so many. But what makes this artist incredible is that plenty of covers are as good as the original recordings, even sometimes so different.

Not the easiest song to sing. These guys are good. But is also shows how easily and smoothly Dylan delivered this--and in addition to writing these incredible lyrics.

I love Fiona Apple's tremolo and above all the fragility of her voice, which sometimes fades almost like smoke in the air. An outstanding performance considering the chosen tone is not in her comfort range.

safe to say this one, unlike so many other folk songs she does with this gang, isn't in her wheelhouse, but she makes it work. But Sarah's always masterful, and Shawn Colvin never fails to add a casual, barely expressed fragility to a good lyric. She is the least showy, tender heart on the sleeve singer imaginable. She's a wonder. Pokey here being a singer not a performer, is awfully good too.

"They're selling postcards of the hanging". For crying out loud you could talk all day about that 1st line. Lynchings and hangings WERE a public event, almost like a party, but meant to send a clear message indeed. And they did proudly take group photos sometimes. You can see many folks, young, old, women, children. Some are smiling. And people think things are bad NOW. No, no, things were much worse when they sold postcards of the hangings.
