So I first heard this song played by the Grateful Dead and I thought it was beautiful. Then I heard it performed by Bob Dylan and I thought, wow, even better, fantastic! And then I heard this rendition which resonates with circumspection and sincerity, the violin gently pulling at one's own heartstrings, evocative, lamentful and mournful and I thought "Holy cow! Every rendition of this song just keeps getting better, like magic, increasing in its appeal to infinity!"

Desolation Row is my absolute favorite of ALL of Bob Dylan's songs. This is a great cover of a classic song rarely heard performed. I wore that track off the vinyl!
@TheBoatmike Жыл бұрын
This is wonderful. Like some writers below, I feel Dylan wrote the litergical music of my life. Desolation Row is one of my all time favorites and I've felt that Desolution is a good place to be. A safe place from the madness of the world. The peformance of this is great. And by having this many musicians involved, it also gives a theatrical staging that many other people appreciate the safety of Desolation Row.

This is the song that I really discovered Dylan. As a 15 year old in South London I was truly blown away. I have followed the great mn ever since. Like others writer's have said he has the sound track to my life And I do not regret one second of it. This version is just brilliant

"Every road you take leads to Bob Dylan". Chuck Prophet was right. I love his songs and I can't say which one is the best to my ears, they're so many. But what makes this artist incredible is that plenty of covers are as good as the original recordings, even sometimes so different.

Not the easiest song to sing. These guys are good. But is also shows how easily and smoothly Dylan delivered this--and in addition to writing these incredible lyrics.

I love Fiona Apple's tremolo and above all the fragility of her voice, which sometimes fades almost like smoke in the air. An outstanding performance considering the chosen tone is not in her comfort range.
@marksopinionservice Жыл бұрын
safe to say this one, unlike so many other folk songs she does with this gang, isn't in her wheelhouse, but she makes it work. But Sarah's always masterful, and Shawn Colvin never fails to add a casual, barely expressed fragility to a good lyric. She is the least showy, tender heart on the sleeve singer imaginable. She's a wonder. Pokey here being a singer not a performer, is awfully good too.

Though several people recognized Al Kooper on stage here, I'm surprised that no one mentioned that he was part of Dylan's band for the album (Highway 61 Revisited) that gave us "Desolation Row". Kooper didn't play on this track, at least not the version that made it to the album. However he did play electric guitar on some of the earlier takes of "Desolation Row", one of which can be heard on Dylan's Bootleg Series volume 7.

Ok people today I ran into some twenty' somethings who didn't know who Bob Dylan is. We as parents, grandparents and great grandparents have failed. My challenge to all of us is to sit them down and have them listen to three Bob Dylan songs of OUR choosing. ( My three would be : Subterranean Homesick Blue's, Desolation Row and Stickley 2nd Street). Failure is not an option. You must report back.

"They're selling postcards of the hanging". For crying out loud you could talk all day about that 1st line. Lynchings and hangings WERE a public event, almost like a party, but meant to send a clear message indeed. And they did proudly take group photos sometimes. You can see many folks, young, old, women, children. Some are smiling. And people think things are bad NOW. No, no, things were much worse when they sold postcards of the hangings.

Some really decent talent on the stage but ............ Why can't people learn the words of the songs they are singing? It's insulting to the audience , insulting to the songwriters who wrote the lyrics and it means that the singer cannot commit to what they are singing. In my opinion it's a form of musical criminality. A great song such as 'Desolation Row' deserves better!
