My hens also did not use the swing they had. I think the swing needs to be heavier so that is swings only slightly when a hen jumps up. Then, the hen will regard it as more of a roost. The hen needs to jump on it out of its own volition. When the flock is foraging and scratching for food none of the hens will lose time staying behind on a swing. They might jump on the swing in their periods of rest - after they have eaten. Lastly, I think 3-8 week old baby chicks would like that swing. They would be able to fly up after they have fledged.

Good idea, Wonder if it would work much better if one could taper the pipe to about the size of the hole, From about 1 1/2 feet up the pipe, And the extra weight on the grains might keep falling, I think it would be easily done with a little heat and stretch the pipe or slot it and plastic weld the cuts, Might try it this spring, Too darn cold right now at minus 20 C

@dbirdbird 😂 The tax is based on three things, the power of the engine, the year of production and the ecological standard but to be honest, I have no idea what weight is put into every portion. However, for some reason it is cheaper for older cars this a lot of ppl from Romania come to Rousse (city on the Danube) to register cars in Bulgaria and drive them in Romania.

We have almost the same pechka as you. We don't get the same issue but our system for lighting it is different. We lay the kindling and paper towards the back of the firebox and leave the front half clear. That way the smoke has less chance to come out of the top plate gaps. We also shut the door as soon as the paper is lit and slightly open the ash drawer to allow more air through. This makes the fire burn hotter and warms the pechka and chimney quicker. Once the fire is burning properly we add more wood to the front half but never further forward than where the bottom grill meets the front fire bricks. That way air will carry the smoke and gases upward and backwards, eliminating and "dead air" areas where the smoke can linger. It takes a bit more managing to start with but it may help reduce your smoke issues. I hope there's something useful for you in all that, it certainly works for us.
@MonkontheHillАй бұрын
Ok, sounds reasonable! 👍🏼 Well, the one or two blows of smoke aren't that bad. At the moment the problem is different. I have a water tank in there for radiators. Now, because of the snow there's a power outage. So the pump is not working and I can't light it at all... 🙄🥶

Thanks for sharing your insight about the smart cat doors. I have watched your previous video where the sureflap didn't work. So now I wonder why you purchased a new one of the same brand. I'm also looking for a good microchip door but all the reviews are so confusing. I wonder whether there is a smart cat door on the market that can scan the microchip from Both sides (entry / exit) , doesn't make a loud sound ,has two points for locking and it is not glitching ? Dualscan is made by sureflap and I feel like it's a risk of buying this brand. Thanks in advance
@MonkontheHillАй бұрын
Hi. Well... It worked before for years pretty well. I bought it because I was sure the hole in the door would fit the flap. And I found a shop that had it on sale. Soon Luna will die and I actually don't need the mechanism anymore but I'm glad to have it. Who knows... Why do you need it to scan from the inside?

Newer model stoves that are sealed and use outside air for combustion are a little easier to cold start in windy weather. My stove is supplied with combustion air by a 4"/100mm metal duct from under the house. I also use super dry split wood kindling with 5 or 6 BBQ brickettes soaked in fire starter placed underneath the kindling. I surround the kindling on both sides with crumpled newspaper. I fully open the damper, light the briquettes and paper, and partially close the stove door. When that fast-burning paper has burned I close the door fully. The paper adds enough heat to start a draft, the briquettes start the kindling quickly and you can add larger wood within 5 or 6 minutes. Works perfectly for me as long as the kindling is really dry.
@MonkontheHillАй бұрын
Especially the outside air system I find fascinating!👍🏼 And yes, the kindling has to light up as quickly as possible. I might make a video about my fire setup using only natural materials. 😉
@goldcountryruss7035Ай бұрын
@@MonkontheHill By using outside air for combustion there isn't any negative pressure generated indoors which means fewer or maybe no cold drafts. Any cold air pulled into the heated space increases the heat requirement.

I have the same problem every once in a while, so what I do is: I take my hot air popcorn popper, take the plastic top off so it's just the base and put it in the unlit stove and let it blow hot air for 3 - 5 minutes. While it's blowing hot air, I also light my small propane torch alongside the popper, I actually just hold it and close the door as much as I can. This heats the chimney up fast! Then I get my newspaper and kindling in there and lit as fast as I can. It works every time!

Straw is the best choice for bedding for animals, not hay or anything thst retains moisture like blankets, etc "Straw is a better choice than hay for animal shelters because it insulates better and repels moisture: Insulation Straw's hollow structure traps air, which helps keep animals warm. It also acts as a barrier between the animal and the ground, which helps retain body heat. Moisture Straw repels moisture, while hay absorbs it and can become moldy. A wet bed can make cats sick, especially in the winter."

For the window, I’d use a transparent plastic like plexiglas, lexan, perspec, or polycarbonate (some of those names mean the same thing, I think). Why? Because they’re insulating. You could also make the window double-paned (one pane inside the box, one outside) for better insulation. You could also attach some insulating material (bubble wrap, for example) to the inside of the door flap. Of course, how insulated you want the box depends on how cold you expect the weather to be. Also, you don’t want it so insulated that there’s no air exchange at all. Some fresh air is necessary. I have built such insulated houses for outdoor cats, too. I didn’t use any artificial heating- I just let the cat’s body provide the warmth. But wearher doesn’t get super cold where I live.
@MonkontheHillАй бұрын
The glass I used I had around. Not sure where to get such a small bit of your mentioned materials here. It's on both sides btw. Inside and outside. Some condense has already built up in between... 🤔 Malka will be ok in there. As long as she fits through the door... She's putting on winter fat. 😂
