This is honestly the most genius thing I have seen for chickens. It's fulfilling for their pecking instinct and there is hardly any (if any at all) food being wasted. Instantly subscribed to your channel my friend. Thank you for bringing this into my life

Great idea! I will try it. Just a small thing, if you put the red caps the other way around, maybe they will hold enough food for the chicken to peck and release more food?
@MonkontheHill12 күн бұрын
I had them both ways. Just make the holes in the caps small enough that they screw on tight. Check the update video. If there's open food around it might attract rats again. And the chickens don't mind picking it up from the ground. 😉

@@MonkontheHill seriously not only for fun! The egg prices increased double. It means I have to spend 2.5€ for one package of eggs(6!) in the supermarket NOT BIO! IF you want BIO ones,,, I couldn't afford it!! But in my kitchen I use a lot of eggs. So? I need to keep chickens! Hahahaha! But before that,,, I still need to pay high prices. So sad

I attached an automatic deer feeder to the bottom of a bucket. It flings out feed 2x a day. The chickens eat it up right away. I fill it once a week. No rat problem.

Will this work with mash or is there a mixture of food you use and if so what do you put in yours? Thank you so much.
@MonkontheHill2 ай бұрын
Um... What's mash? It works best with dry stuff. I put in wheat and started to add some chicken food where the bits are a little smaller than wheat.

Please tell us the size of the holes drilled in the bottom of the barrel & size of the eye bolts. I assume you found the optimal diameter to accommodate dispensing of most chicken feeds.
@MonkontheHill2 ай бұрын
It's less about the sizes of drill and bolt, more of the size of the gaps and food. On the first one I used thinner bolts. Here the bolts are 8 mm. The drill used was 12 mm. But I had to make the holes a bit larger afterwards by rotating the drill a bit. I'd say holes 5 mm larger than the bolt. At the end it's trial and error... 😂

Enjoyed your vid and the info. I have noticed in some other youtube vids that ppl say they add water to their chicken feed and ferment it for 3 days b4 giving to the chickens. Healthier and cut the cost of feeding the chickens in half.
@MonkontheHill2 ай бұрын
Thanks for enjoying! 🙏🏼 With 800sqm free ranging my chickens should have a balanced diet. The cut of cost is an argument though! But then I have to invent an automatic fermenter-feeder... 😂

Hello, your videos are very interesting and this one is super, I have questions for you: 1.- You use wheat, what are the diameters of the hole in the bucket and what is the diameter of the screw and in my case I use whole corn and the size is larger. Do you have any information about the diameters for corn. 2.- Minimum age to start this system in your experience or only Avea adults have used. Thank you in advance for your response to these questions.
@MonkontheHillАй бұрын
Hi and thank you! For diameters have a look at the update video. About the age: I think as long as they can reach the triggers, the mothers should teach them where the food is coming from. But as long as they are little I'd give them an easier to reach option.

Would it work with fermented chicken feed? ... Excellent, well done!!
@MonkontheHill2 ай бұрын
I'd say it works best with dry food that can crumble through small spaces.

I am also looking for ways to work with fermented food. This is great for dry food. Thanks.
@MonkontheHill2 ай бұрын
Yes, fermented food is very good for the chickens but I never used it. I give them chopped vegetables every evening. Maybe use the feeder for snacking during the day and one time a day throw them some fermented food.

@MonkontheHill18 күн бұрын
What are two legged rats? Before using only these feeders there were 10 times more rats! I have a camera. That's why I know that it's working. The ones that are left are desperate for food now. Like this it's easier to catch them.
