I really don't get why they don't use screws for primary fixation on the rims like in the ALIF cages for instance. I understand that it is a "press fit" technology but still the patients risk a dislodge in the primary stage as nothing holds the disc in place other than vertebrae pressure and those little pegs

Great to hear this.I am a 70 year old woman from New Zealand, diagnosed with severe lumbar spinal stenosis in 3 places in 2017 and offered a fusion, what I did not want,I travelled to the USA in April 2024 ,wheelchair in the airport, walking 1.5km one day after surgery, back in NZ after 5 days,no pain,I can do all the things I want to, e.g. 12km hiking

Every day I am so grateful for this surgery. And I'm so thankful to Dr. Illerhaus and the entire ONZ Spine Connection team, especially to Susanne, the onsite coordinator, and to Fabian (and his wife) for sharing his story. It helped me make the decision to do this, last year in 2023. Of all the video testimonials, my condition was closest to Fabian's: degenerative disc disease, same discs. By August of 2023 I was walking with a cane, I couldn't sleep more than 2 - 3 hours a night because of the pain, I couldn't focus on my work because of the pain, I couldn't accompany my son to his athletics because I could no longer walk to the fields. I was looking into lumbar spinal fusion and learned that disc replacement was an actual thing. I did my research, contacted some clinics, spoke with references, and decided to do it with ONZ. I traveled from the U.S. to Germany, through the airports, in a wheelchair. I arrived in Germany and had my surgery (identical to Fabian's) in September of 2023 with Dr. Illerhaus. The experience was wonderful, all considered. My crippling back pain was gone immediately and I was able to walk standing upright a day after my surgery. My rehab and physical therapy went fine, and on March 9th, six months after my surgery, I hiked the Grand Canyon. Zero pain. I can now wrestle with my son, hike, lift weights and live my life totally pain free. I couldn't be happier with my outcome and I tell everyone about it, just in case someone else needs this kind of help. To me, this surgery was a miracle of modern medicine. I have my life back. I'm so grateful.

Amazing. I’ve had spinal fusion. I wish I had heard of this first. Spinal fusion is hard to get over, and it takes a year out of your life. No more bending over. It takes a lot of rehabilitation. And MORE SURGERY down the road 😦

Hi @thomaschetney990, if a spine fusion has resulted in successful bony union then principally it cannot be reversed.

Would it be possible to have an update from Taran explaining how is his life going on five years later? I really appreciate these videos and your work but it would be interesting to have a more longterm feedback about it. In relation to that, how long do these disk replacements last? Could you live a whole live with them without needing another surgery? Considering a 30yo active patient. Thank you very much in advance!

Hi Miguel, if you are considering motion-preserving spine surgery please contact us directly at spineconnection.org/contact-us/. We are pleased to connect you with previous patients including Taran after the evaluation process, and answer your specific questions. Kind regards, Team SC

Hello @SpineConnection, would this procedure be possible for a young man (33y) with two previous discectomies at the same L5-S1 level? Also, would it be possible to perform this motion preserving surgery even if the patient has an interspinous spacer from the last surgery? Could it be removed to achieve complete restoration of movement at this level with the disk replacement surgery? Thank you very much in advance!

I am 65 and no longer a viable candidate for disc replacement. Furthermore, I am no longer a productive member of society because of my age so I’ve been ruled out of disc replacement surgery. So now I’m scheduling my fourth back surgery to undergo the barbaric fusion method. 💩

hello My diagnosis after the classic operation at the L4-L5 level, from the sample taken based on the microbiological analysis, the result is Staphylococus Aures, I have taken antibiotics for 3 months in a row, but I am not cured since the infection has damaged 2 levels of the discs. Can I have disc replacement at your place and how much will it help me to live a pain free life???

I am a 37 y/o male who has undergone two surgical interventions for pars defect in L5 with spondylolisthesis grade I (L5-S1). The first one was a pars repair with the wire but, 6 years later one of the screws failed and had to go in for surgery again. It was a similar intervention but instead the surgeon used hooks and screws. Even though my back felt more stable since day one, I still had some discomfort (instability sensation) and back pain after playing soccer or running for more than 30 mins. It actually never felt 100% perfect, and honestly it has been extremely frustrating since I have always been a high performance athlete. My question is....could this device retract my anterolisthesis back to grade 0? I ask this because I can feel the discomfort comes from the stenosis caused by the slippage. I feel so much relive when I pull myself back with my hands in my hips. Best Regards, Jimmy.
