There is no nothingness. Nothingness can't be a void because a void is something. Nothingness can't be a lack of consciousness because even without consciousness we know that things are reacting to things, a rock is being held by gravity on a distant lifeless planet for example. Even a blade of grass is reacting to sunlight and the vibration of ( a tree falling in the woods with no one to hear it.) Nothingness can't exist in the cosmos because it would then be part of something making it a something as well. Nothing is truly inconceivable unlike infinity which is something that we can at least begin to fathom. If your soul or consciousness ( or whatever you believe ) never existed and you were never born you'd be nothing but then being a nothing would be something in that timeless paradox.
