Poly's lose tension the quickest, perhaps over a year of not hitting it could be ok out of the gate but I would suspect it would need to be restrung but they are all different.. you could possibly get away with multi's after a year they retain tension pretty well and synthetic gut is somewhere between the two maybe closer to multi if we're talking tension retention. You'd also have to make sure the racquets weren't subject to hot and cold throughout the year.. you'd probably have a better chance of using the racquet with multi or synth if the racquet was in the house compared to garage or car in a 4 season area. I'd test the racquet and assume whichever tension or string you used that probably after a year if you were going to plan on playing a lot that you'd be better off with fresh strings.. but I'm more string sensitive and use mainly poly's or hybrid.. once they go they either lock up (notch) or get too erratic (loose) mainly because of the characteristics of the specific poly but not exclusively polys.

Well not entirely true. Polys are super durable. I could see it taking a while to break one of those though the playability will be lost long before it breaks.

Really great question! I am not sure. I use a vibration dampener when hitting so I don't hear a ping while I'm playing. I definitely ping the mains as I'm stringing to make sure each main has the same pitch as it would make sense that the same tension would vibrate at the same frequency (?). I would think a guitarist would maybe be better able to explain! But once the racket is strung, I don't ping the strings. I know there are tension-checking devices that work by assessing this pinging action (Tourna Tennis Stringmeter is one).

depends on the strings you're using I reckon, revolves tend not to ping much while Hyper-G's and such have a little more ping towards the end.

Average human ear is not precise enough. There are phone apps for measuring strings tension (by sound). I measure my racquets after every stringjob -> every playsession -> every ~5 playhours (talking about natural gut/poly hybrid). The results are logical and correspond to my gutfeeling.

Even a low tension should maintain its “shape”. What happens is the strings lose their springiness or elasticity with time and use and thus cannot snap back into position. Static tension, even low at 40 pounds, is slightly different than the liveliness (“springiness”/elasticity) of the string.

Depends if it's poly or multi/synthetic gut. A poly string will snap back into parallel position even at low tensions. A multi string won't have the snap back and tends to get pushed out of parallel as you rally. This snap back helps poly strings generate more spin than multis.

Reason i thought Poly would last longer is coz i just got the babolat excel 16 like 2-3 months ago on my main racquet (i play 2-3 sets a week), and its already catching lot of the tennis ball felt fiber and not returning back to its original position. However, my other racquet which (i think) has the poly has been going good for a good part of 8-10 months. Thanks for the info!

@Vishal Lalwani, my favorite poly (though not known to be durable) is the popular Solinco Hyper-G. I use a 16L (1.25 as opposed to a 1.2 or thinner which is 17 or 18 depending on brand) hoping that the slight extra thickness will add just a slight more durability. Still after maybe 4-6 hours of hitting, it loses its liveliness. To maximize Poly durability, go as thick as possible (like 1.3, 16G). A good friend of mine recommends the Ashaway Crossfire ZX Tour (it's a hybrid) as a particularly durable combination. I'm going to try it out as it is my next string to demo on one of my rackets - I use one racket to try new strings/tensions etc so I have something to directly compare with my "regular" set up. @Hafadaze is right in that polys will never really break, but they will lose their liveliness well before they completely fail (break) and that for the same gauge, a multifilament will last longer (last = maintain playability). I personally don't like playing with severely frayed multifilaments because 1. I never know when they are going to break and I feel like it's hitting with a time bomb and 2. Because even if tension is maintained on the remaining non-frayed multifilaments, I worry about unevenness in the string bed between worn (frayed sections) and unworn areas. And also, I don't mind stringing my rackets :)

@@vishallalwani6070 polys are more durable but they loose tension faster compared to a multi. So yes you’re correct they do last longer than a multi but you would end up playing with a dead string.

@@muchacho87 facts I always play best 2 - 4 hitting sessions with the new strings to break them in, even if I've used them for years.

the difference to Pros is they restring it nearly each day. so they have nearly every playtime same weight on the string. when i restring in eg 2-3 week rythm i have a bigger difference in weight so i it is a bigger difference when i play with new one

@Summon256, an Alcaraz-Djokovic Quarter would be an incredible match - certainly worthy of a final. I know Alcaraz tailed off at the end of the year, but how much of that had to do with injury do you think? Also, I'd be curious to see how Alcaraz performs on a slower hard court (Australian) having shown success on clay. I don't think we can use his 2022 AO performance as a measure given how much better he got throughout the year.

@@love40tennischannel It depends on the season...if you're keeping track on court pace index (so called cpi) you will see that AO and USO were being swapped back and forth from season to season...this year it is rumored to be faster indeed than well...last year's USO at very least, but we'll see...and yes you are absolutely right! AO plexicushion courts were used to be significantly slower! I think they speed it up around 2018-2019 for some reason...These days there is marginal difference in cpi between AO and the USO and it juggles between medium-fast to fast from season to season...

I think you may have read to much into what I was saying. I believe I said "if I HAD to critique" (meaning, to get super nit-picky) Sinner could have gone out wider with the shot, or deeper and flatter to give Djokovic less time. Absolutely it was the right play of Serve+1, it just wasn't enough against Djokovic (hence the shot of the year!)

Nonsense. Sinner had every opportunity to hit a winner, and he didn't. Sure, it's reasonable for him to play it safe there, but there's no reason that Djokovic should have won that point. It's simply a tactical error by Sinner, even if there are maybe 3 players on earth who can get that ball back. Sinner did not have enough confidence in his forehand to blast a winner or take it wider.

I freely acknowledged it was my hope that Nadal would win - and in that hope, I made it my prediction (thus confusing hope for certainty). Let's be honest, Nadal will probably never win this tournament, and may not even return to it depending on how 2023 goes. I was just hoping that maybe in his last run here, he'd make a run. But, in all fairness, even though we know Rafa and Daniil are not advancing, let's go with the supposed final: I think picking Rafa over Novak was quite unreasonable and unsupported with pure facts and statistics. Novak is playing superbly in the last 2 months, while Rafa is doing a very poor job. Also, I would never, and I repeat - NEVER pick Rafa to win an indoor match over Novak, and ESPECIALLY given the circumstances - the surface is quite fast (I don't think Rafa has ever won a match against Novak on a faster hard court surface - he won US Open matches against Novak, but US Open is slower than, say Aus Open), it's indoors, and the last time Rafa won over Novak indoors, was London 2010 in RR, when Novak still hadn't been what he became since 2011. Also, the fact that Novak has 14 indoor titles compared to Rafa's 1, in 2005 Madrid, it speaks for itself. So, I'm not arguing your other predictions, but this one was very off and very, very biased. @@love40tennischannel I don't think it's the age thing, although both Novak and Rafa have to be just a tad slower than in their 20s, or, if not slower, definitely more fatigued after long runs. We saw this in Paris Masters final, against Rune. That difficult match against Tsitsipas in semis took quite a toll in Novak's stamina. I'd argue it's more Rafa's playing style. Even though he CAN play his forehand on the flatter side, it's rarely flat enough to be dangerous on the indoors hard court - moreover, his net clearance on the forehand is so high that any indoors hard court specialist doesn't have any problem being in the right place to return it. More so, in the indoors conditions, he doesn't have the help of the outside factors - wind, high temperatures, sun, uneven clay - all of those factors help his extreme spin rate and the ball bounce - it's hard enough to return it on clay - add the awkward ball bounce off the surface and it's comfortably a winner for Rafa. Second thing - you can get away from your habitual playing style tactics for a shot or two, but the moment your focus shifts somewhere else, or it doesn't work after a game or two, you get back to your well known style. For Rafa, it's short, diagonal inside - in forehand with lots of spin, playing on the opponent's backhand. That's a nightmare to play against on the clay court , but indoors, and against players like Novak, with arguably the best backhand in the game - it's fruitless to play it. Still, Nadal plays it like it's Federer across the net, which always ends up badly for Rafa. We've seen the same against Felix, who has solid backhand - nowhere near as good as Novak's, but significantly better than Fritz's or Ruud's. Third - Rafa was never known to has a strong season finish. Usually, after US Open, it's like his focus and stamina and health goes down - out of 130 finals played, only 12 of them he played in October/November , and his score is 4-8. He won his only indoors title in Madrid 2005, when it had been held in October, and he won French Open in 2020, it was in October that year. The other 2 titles came against Monfils and Kyrgios, but his losses were against Federer, Djokovic and Davydenko, all of them superb indoors players. In fact, Davydenko played 8 indoor finals, and lost ONLY one, to Djokovic in Tennis Masters Cup in Shanghai, in 2008. So, while Rafa can be considered one of the greatest all round players, he's still unmatched and subpar to the indoor court specialists like Roger, Novak and Davydenko.

Looks like Tsitsipas did in fact hit (more than) a few unforced errors. One site is citing 22. I guess the unforced errors are still the stat of the match, but just not in the unexpected way. Djokovic had 2 (from the ATP site).

@@love40tennischannel Ruud is really not in form at the moment and last year he had a pretty easy road to the semis, but that is also completely ignoring the fact that Ruud doesn’t play that good on indoor hard like Rafa, while Fritz, even though he’s not in that great of form either, is still good on indoor hard (and I also think as this is his first time here, he’s gonna try and make the most of it), just needs to clean up his unforced error count from his last match in Paris against Simon.

Nadal hasn't been to the final of the ATP finals since 2013. Surface is the key here and not given proper consideration in this video - *indoor hardcourt*. Nadal has won a grand total of 1 indoor hardcourt title ever in his whole career and that was 17 years ago! think about that. just 1 indoor hardcourt tournament ever over his whole long career. also against Tommy Paul in his last match at Bercy he was absolutely terrible in the deciding set - it's like he didn't have the will to win there at all. The fast Turin court with the low bounce won't suit him - it's faster than Bercy where Nadal has never won either and looked very poor this year as said. He has an easy group so has a good chance of the SF but don't see him getting past that really and definitely not winning it for the first time ever. Especially has no chance whatsoever against Djokovic who has won 19 consecutive hardcourt sets against him! you've have to go back over 9 years to find the last time Nadal won a single set against him on hardcourt.
