Wow, I like most of John Wayne's movies, but this one was a big stinker. The stupid sound effects was just too much.

i feel impelled to point out that the location of this film was Arkansas and Louisiana and neither of them are Western States! They are EAST of the Mississippi and geographically are NOT 'the west'. Also the depiction of the confederates was totally incompetent. There is NO WAY a force of Confederates would charge a prepared position down a towns main street with enfilading fire from 3 sides. Did the director get this story confused with the Charge of the Light Brigade? It is preposterous. This is supposedly a fictionalized (HIGHLY) account of Griersons Raid. It has no relation to reality i'm afraid.

First time a John Wayne movie had me in tears. So intense on so many levels, extremely hard to watch. An unbelievable film that showed war as it was, as opposed to glorifying the event. The only other film that I can think of that moved me this much was "They died with their boots on", with Errol Flynn and Olivia de Havilland..Both films amazing from beginning to end.

Why has Hollywood always persisted in hiring actors to play Southern Roles, having to fake the accent? When there's always been a vast population of Southern speaking actors to fill the roles. Never, not 1, has ever gotten it right. It just makes No sense, always confounds me. Every Southerner "rolls their eyes". In the same country ... 🔺When Authentic is available for the same price, don't buy the faux brand. The South started that war, fired the 1st shot, then blamed the North for doing the necessary to win it, blaming the North for pushing their forces back and fighting in their front yards. Grant and Sherman did the required to bring the subject to an end. ... and to deny it was about Slavery is ludicrous, it, like every war was about Money, and Free Labor aka Slavery was absolutely the fire that fueled that war. The Wealthiest of the "Plantation Corporations" had upwards of 900 - 1200 enslaved Peoples for the farming and productions of Indigo, Sugar Cane, and Cotton. They are listed as having been the Wealthiest men in the world, (other than the Banking and Financiers*, and Monarchs). (*) The World Banking and Financiers were the ones that encouraged and inspired the Southern Elite to the actions of that war. They wanted to own and control the USA Money, Financials, and Economy. They got that with the Federal Reserve Act, now the "Federal Reserve Bank Corporation, privately owned by the Rothschilds, whom are neither a USA Citizen nor Resident.
