I know the portal's already been identified as "the void" in the game's official files, but that might be intentionally misleading. When I see a beam of light, I don't connect it with death and despair, but hope, perhaps even escape - as in, escape from this entire nightmare reality. When the Frog crashes through the wall, it's almost like the universe itself is attempting to prevent your liberation. (Seriously, try playing this video with Hans Zimmer's "No Time for Caution" in the background, and you'll see what I mean.)

Theory, since the lore update came the blood is human blood. That light is where humanity went into these oceans of human blood same with ocean life. On a moon where other civliazation had built for example the howling monolith or the pillars, or the buildings.

Why people try to use how the game is made (that monsters are just small images) to say it’s not scary is beyond me. The story and how it’s presented is what’s scary. You don’t go around saying a horror movie ain’t scary because there’s an actor behind the mask.
