RS-485 is differential signalling. Technically you only need the A and B lines. The ground wire is there to do a few things, one of them being keeping the ground potential between distant devices the same as you can get quite a lot of ground potential across 1km. In a setup where the data pair is not electrically isolated (magnetic or optical) that ground potential between the devices can be more than enough to fry the interface at either end. Even where there is isolation having the ground wire will let you place protection devices at the far end (movs, TVS diodes etc) and clamp the voltage appearing on the data lines to the remote ground to avoid blowing up the isolated side of the remote interface if there is a spike on the line for some reason. The ground can also provide shield earthing if the wire has a foil or braid in it. There's quite a bit to it if you dig up technical docs for RS485.

The reason I prefer Victron charge controllers is because you can put in more amps faster to charge up your batteries, versus the all in one units where they limit how much amperage you can push into your batteries! This is extremely important when you have limited sun hours!
@AdamDeLay074 күн бұрын
Wouldn’t that be the case with any external charger controller where you don’t have communication? It’ll charge by voltage and the current just gets pulled as much as is allowed. You don’t want to always charge your batteries with continuous high current as I’ve been told that can degrade your batteries faster.
@simon3594 күн бұрын
@@AdamDeLay07 Yes, this is why I keep mine under 100 Amps if possible, taking my Victron charge controllers and running them at 70 to 80% setting in the VictronConnect app, for the summer months. The rest of the year doesn’t matter, since it never gets anywhere near that amperage.

I'd like to see updates on this, I'm planning on buying this year. Right now I think either 2 NHX10 for $500 less or 1 EG4 18kpv . 20kva vs 12kva and 18kpv vs 30kpv . Priority for me is safely bringing both inverter and grid into same 200 amp breaker with CTs. Approved in all 50 states no chance hurting a lineman when grid down.
@AdamDeLay074 күн бұрын
I’m not sure about all the specific certifications needed, but any hybrid inverter that can backfeed a panel should have the ability to detect if the grid is down and turn off the backfeed capability. I wanna say it’s called “islanding” or something like that. This inverter does have that built in so if the grid goes down, it will only send power out the AC Output.
