This is cool to watch. Anyone thinking of getting a gaited horse should watch this to see it is often work and an art form really to get a good gait.
@GayeDeRusso18 сағат бұрын
Thank you, yes alot of work. This is her first gaited horse, but she has done everything I said to work on. He started out very pacey but now can do a flat walk, running walk, starting the saddle gait and getting the canter. I wish all gaited owners would work as hard as she does. And she never rushed his gaits. They are a wonderful team.

My horse totally clicks his teeth and his ears flop at the running walk, but then he he starts going faster and I feel like I keep going really up and down like I almost want to post. Would that be him just going into a pace?
@Nutmeg1429 күн бұрын
He is a TWH. The very tall, lanky kind of old show breeding with the sickle hocks.. If that helps you picture his movement.
@GayeDeRusso9 күн бұрын
Yes either a pace or a step pace. Teach him shoulder in it helps alot to break up the pace when going faster to get him into a saddle gait instead of a pace.

Hello Gaye, how do you decide what bit to use? Is that a wonder bit? Thank you
@GayeDeRusso12 күн бұрын
Here is some info on bits to help you decide. But there are certain bits to help bring their head down and others that help you to raise their head. Raising the head helps with the trotty ones and lowering the head helps with the pacey ones kzbin.info/www/bejne/gnq5epZvhZmYgbMsi=4de2Kt_a2N51TuZN

What is the best gaited breed for a beginner?
@GayeDeRusso17 күн бұрын
I would find an older well gaited calm horse. Each horse is different even in the same breeds, but I would recommend one with a shorter stride not the big long stride of some walking horses. Stick with heritage type of walking horses or go with a fox trotter or rocky but again older well gaited ones.

Right now I'm trying to work through this with my new horse and it's always something outside the arena that moves or loud noises all of a sudden and spooks him. Any tips on working on things that are farther away? I wish I had someone to run around outside the arena but I'm mostly by myself.
@GayeDeRusso18 күн бұрын
I would make sure you lunge or roundpen him for at least 10 minutes before riding, it can help alot to get rid of spooky energy. Work at gait or pace or trot or canter for a full 10 minutes and change direction every 2-3 circles, then desensitize for 10 minutes with the rope, flag, pool noodle, bags etc. Then ride and see if it makes a difference. Most the time the horses are not prepared enough for the work. Also make sure no extra sugar, no alfalfa, cut all supplements except a calming supplement with magnesium might help. But some supplements also make horses hot and spooky so best to take everything out and see. Then I would also make loud noises at feeding time, air horn, trash cans etc. so he associates the noises with food can also make a big difference. You should see a difference in a week or two if you do it every day. You can also tie him up in the arena after you work him hard and ride your bike around or jog around the outside of the arena.

@GayeDeRusso hi Gaye, I'm just reading this thread and curious about why you recommend no alfalfa? Thanks.
@flychomperfly17 күн бұрын
If you have the ability to lead and control your horse outside an enclosure, you can try to introduce your horse to the source of the fear so he/she can see for himself/herself that the object is not dangerous...OR recreate the same distraction right there within the enclosure -- just like Gaye explained in the video. See if there is some way to help your horse physically interact positively with the source of the fear. I have taught how to help prey animals deal with fear. They need to be reassured that they are not in danger. They are indeed smart enough to figure it out if we help them learn something is OK. Good luck!

In some horses alfalfa makes them nuts. They are jumpy, spooky and way too much energy. Some horses are fine on it but others cannot even have half a flake or they get crazy.

How do you sit on the horse when you’re scared not clamping on how can you stay on?I am new with horses and I got my first Tennessee walker she is 12 she is pretty well trained ,but nervous because she is in a new area . I have her for 3 weeks now and I am doing desensitizing Ground work with her she is very good with everything tarps ,flag sticks.i took her for one Trail ride so far. I just don’t know how to hold my legs last time I ask a student that I took riding lessons from she told me to sit like a Nudel I sure fell off that horse like a noodle.
@GayeDeRusso18 күн бұрын
Lessons are a big help. You have to learn how to balance yourself on the horse. Your weight needs to be on your seat bones and then down your legs into your heels. You should be able to draw a straight line from your ears to your shoulder to your hip then to your heel and you need to look where you want to go. It takes a lot of time to learn to balance. Using a yoga ball can help as well as balance exercises on and off the horse. kzbin.info/www/bejne/kIS4oHWGmr-rpdksi=THbYUZQBOIMoJ2iN kzbin.info/www/bejne/eXS9ppivqZyZhNksi=uGa8BHzam3LPwRQv

please explain why you have the rider in the hunt seat to engage canter..also I am confused about how many gaits you can ask for in a gaited horse..I have a rocky
@GayeDeRusso19 күн бұрын
This horse keeps pacing, she is trying to free up the horse's back to help. Trotty gaited horses are totally different and canter easily compared to pacey. They have many gaits and each horse is different. If you watch the gaited spectrum video, some horses can do all those gaits at all different speeds. kzbin.info/www/bejne/g6nOZal6h9eDjNUsi=oE5SZOxEwxWv8_nl

Thanks again Gaye! Hey my horse does something that feels like a canter but it has 4 even beats. It is just a little slower than a canter. He does this if I won't let him canter. It feels great like I'm riding a quad. Very stable and smooth. Do you know which gait that might be Gaye?
@GayeDeRusso24 күн бұрын
It might be a gait a lope if it smooth but has a little rocking motion to it, otherwise if smooth and no rocking motion it is most likely a rack. kzbin.info/www/bejne/qnW2pH-vhct7b8ksi=bM7DRpFwd9wRrNr1

Gaye, are you wearing a safety vest? Could you give us some advice about safety vest. Advice on fit of one. How they run by size or weight? I wear a helmet but think that a vest would be a good addition to my riding attire. How do I know if one is of good quality? What should I look for when comparing them. Are there some made in America that are highly rated?
@GayeDeRusso24 күн бұрын
Yes I wear a eventing vest by tipperary and an air vest. The air vest only goes off if you fall off, but I ride some trippers at times and then I wear both. The two best kinds that I like are the hit air vest www.hitairequestrian.com and point two pointtwousa.com/collections/equestrian-air-vests/vest both are light, contact the companies and they will help you with sizing if you need help. kzbin.info/www/bejne/kISWZXWIpJWAZpIsi=Vu7oJPFFmYfJja3t
