I love how art shows us how "mistakes" are not mistakes at all but access to new ideas and more creativity. I'm gonna take a stab and say that it's the deprivation of air that pulls the ink away from the fabric. What kind of silk do you use? I have been using habotai in attempts to marble on water using surfactants. The results are too soft shaped.

This is extremely interesting and inspiring Jane, thank you. I am just starting out, I haven't even ordered a gel plate yet. I know that I will learn a great deal from you and I have subscribed. I am amazed at that huge square gel plate that you have there! Did you make it yourself? The largest Gelli Arts and Gelelf plates that I have seen are A2 size but yours is the first very large square plate that I have seen. A bit like having different layers of a screen print design on two halves of the same screenprint screen, I fancy the idea of having a Gel plate like yours - I do not really have any interest in working on small plates other than to use them as "patches" on a larger image.

hello Jane. Thank you for this video. I am unable to source sodium alginate. Can you recommend an accessible alternative? A bit of research led me to xanthan gum. Will that work?
@JaneDunnewold22 күн бұрын
I'm not sure where you are located but sodium alginate is available almost everywhere so maybe have another look? I haven't used xanthan gum but no one I have worked with ever thought it was a really good substitute.
@Alexandra-ks7cb17 күн бұрын
I have read you cannot use xantham gum as the dye will bond to it instead of the fabric. Sodium alginate is also know as Agar Agar available at most Asian grocery stores.

Jane, these are such fun. I'm not sure how long to leave the fabric in the ink. Suggestion?
@JaneDunnewold22 күн бұрын
If you are just soaking it to color it all over leave it in until it's dark enough. If it isn't dark enough when it dries, you can repeat the process.

Thank you so much for your inspiration! I have now bought a heat press to try this. You mentioned that you can also add color, patterns and texture to the print. Do you have a video or workshop online showing this? Or can you shortly explain how to do it?
@JaneDunnewold22 күн бұрын
Thanks for writing here. I have a book on Amazon that explains it all in detail and also a very extensive online course that happens to be deep discounted right now. I would suggest one or both of those as there is so much to it, I can't do it justice in a brief comment.

Great video. I'll have to try this method. In regard to the ink not taking well to the tablecloth material, I had a similar issue with regular fabric dye. Through some research I learned that a lot of tablecloths are treated with some kind of water-resistant chemical to prevent them from absorbing stains.
@JaneDunnewold22 күн бұрын
Yes, that's right. Many fabrics are treated with sizing or a repellant that helps them avoid staining. It is almost impossible to remove. Older linens don't usually have that treatment which makes them the perfect choice, plus you get the extra credit for re-purposing!
@tomfullery971022 күн бұрын
@@JaneDunnewold I read that you can scour the fabric to remove the repellent, but I haven't tried it yet. But that may be the solution. Personally, I've decided to just avoid trying to dye tablecloths.

This was a GREAT tutorial! I'm surprised how you let each layer of paint dry before pulling the print; it's been years since I did gel printing, but I remember it always feeling like a race to lay down paints and pull prints BEFORE the paint dried. Your method is just so much more relaxed, with more time to think about colors, potential effects and what the next layer could be. Thank you, I'll be back to see your future videos!

I can't get my image to transfer at all even with thinner paint and double printed on my monochrome laser printer. using my brand new plate
@JaneDunnewold2 ай бұрын
You may either be waiting to long to lay down your image or be waiting too long to pull it up. Also getting the right amount of pressure across the surface while the image is face down on the plate is tricky. Make sure you're getting a nice, thin "velvety" layer of paint down and lay down image immediately. Use brayer or hand to apply even pressure (not too light, not too hard) across entire image for only 5-7 seconds or so and pull it up! There are many variables and getting them all right takes practice. You got this!

What is a jell plate
@JaneDunnewold2 ай бұрын
A gel plate is a soft, flexible surface used in printmaking that holds ink or paint for creating unique textures and patterns. It's used for mono-printing, meaning each print you pull is unique vs traditional printmaking where you make many copies of the exact same image. Its flexible material allows you to press objects like stencils, lace, or leaves into it, leaving clear impressions that transfer easily to paper or fabric. With a gel plate, you can create layered, textured prints without needing a press, making it an accessible and versatile tool for artists of any skill level! Here's a good beginner friendly video! kzbin.info/www/bejne/rZW7aZyXncmAl8k

@JaneDunnewold2 ай бұрын
Painting circles is also an option, but this way I have a tool that can be reused and also repeats the same image. This comes into play when thinking about design principles like repetition and unity. If you watches the entire video, you'll also see that I get an interesting secondary effect of blending the colors by using the stamp. What a kind comment! Thanks!
