Studying and Abstracting Form

Form is sometimes confused with shape. When we studied shape, we recognized that it’s defined by being two dimensional. Form is three-dimensional, which means it has substance and volume. So a form can be a shape, but a shape is not a form.
Form is not defined by the materials that are used. Any material that can be used to create a three-dimensional object is fair game. I once saw a huge “form” that was a six feet wide, made of bras that had been stitched together strap to strap, and then rolled into a ball!
Remember, play is open-ended. For fun. You may not have an end goal for this, but it is exactly the kind of thing that can spur thinking and ideas that are worth pursuing and purposeful.
Using a blown up ballon as the initial form, tear up thin strips of fabric - a recycled cotton shirt, for example. Soak the strips in a mixture of matte medium and water. Make the solution approximately 75% matte medium and 25% water. Wrap the strips around the ballon, and create a bowl or vessel shape. Allow the medium to dry and then pop the ballon to remove it. What else could you do to further embellish the form?
Another version of this would be to follow the same process with strips of newsprint or junk mailers. Change materials, and now you are making a version of paper mache’!
Create a dimensional shape by sewing it on the sewing machine. Leave the seams on the outside. Use fabric or use paper. Stuff it, or stiffen it. Spackle it? What next?
