I guess you could say that crevice plants have found their niche in life. I grew up in Arvada.

Hi Kenton, You came to my house in Arvada many years ago as a consultant for my front yard rock garden. We love it, especially in May. Thank you for starting me on my rock garden journey.

Steve! What a discovery to stumble upon the interview I had been wishing for. I bought Seth's book a month ago, and have been vigorously scultping my first crevice garden on our property in the woods of NCarolina. I am mostly concerned, before planting, to get the base material right; the proper soil composition. My native soil is red-clay-like, yet some is dusty and dry lifeless dirt, with a plethora of small pebbles and jagged rocks, so I am adding more local rock dust and masonry sand to the mix. Good luck to you in CA, (where I previously lived).

Hi, wonder if you could help me increase my yield on my one tree. I have a dwarf avocado tree probably 15 years old. Each year I get tons of leaves and a lot of shoots that end up falling off the tree. I probably get 10 edible avocados a year from the tree. How can I prevent those shoots from falling off the tree and becoming edible fruit? Any suggestions?

Hello, I happen to be an American living in Australia. With the eremophila, if you want it bushy prune whilst it is young with tip prunings. It still keeps the very upright habit though and doesn't really truly look 'bushy' in my opinion and I tend to prefer it as a few plumes. Other species of eremophila are more naturally bushy if someone wants a truly shrubby looking one. Generally I'd prune it after flowering before it gets a post flowering growth spurt. Cuttings strike easily (pretty much every emu bush will) but may require better drainage than the parent plant if the parent plant was grafted onto rootstock by the nursery grower to help it be more 'general buying public' friendly for the shops.

Peace be upon you. In my home garden, sycd was grown 15 years ago. During the first 13 years it was good, but in the last two years, the growth of the leaves began to be incomplete. Note that I fertilize it every winter with manure or compost, and during the summer with NPK fertilizer. Help us❤

i think that some hort folks put a place name on common species - like Arctostaphylos manzanita - in order to distinguish it from other populations - sometimes there is a visible difference, but others don't have anything particularly distinct visibly.

Thanks for the presentation Katherine and SoCal Horticultural Society for uploading this. It's great to see some effort put into building up ecosystems in the concrete jungle, a.k.a. L.A. With the droughts going on, these kinds of projects are a good step forward. It's confusing how cities, towns and home owners steward public and private places in these times we live in with water shortages going on. Can drive a sane person out-sane. I'm based a couple hours east of LA and wanted to ask if you have any networks that you are ok with sharing to talk with about this stuff. I've been going down some rabbit holes in regards to permaculture for close to a year now but don't really know of any networks in SoCal to talk to about addressing methods to tackle these concerning times with restoring natural ecosystems and waterways. Seems a great deal of this drought stuff could be easily addressed with the right steps taken with building up ecosystems, better city planning, and managing watersheds to slow down water flows so water has a home in the soil. Regardless, keep up the good work and much respect!

I show this every semester to my Horticulture class at Port of Los Angeles High School! We now do a "Compost Hub" assignment where they imagine/draw in a 2-3 block radius from their home, 1) All the places they could gather compostables, 2) Where they could take those compostables to turn into compost, and 3) What could be done with the compost in that radius! I encourage imagination around business ideas, volunteerism, gig work, barter economy, etc. Young people are excited to imagine a future of this "work" being the "work" we do! ';) Paz.

I really enjoyed this presentation. Very informative. Just picked up a Parryi Truncata this morning. I picked up a Quadricolor, an Americana, and what I believe to be a Striata, all over the last month+. I also have a golden barrel and a devil's tongue cacti. I'm collecting plants for a small garden I want to create next Spring.
