At 45 seconds in this video the guy says, "German engineering with American innovation". The heart and brains of any battery is the Battery Management System (BMS) which inside a Sonnen battery is made by a Chinese Company, Pylontech. So, "at the core of a Sonnen battery is Chinese electronics and American innovation". I reverse engineered a Sonnen battery and ran into nothing Germany about it. But there was plenty of Chinese.

Would be interesting to see this comparison again, especially after having contractors install Tesla batteries and see 5% of them leak. Also, how are you comparing the "services" and usage of the batteries? 10 Yr/ 10,000 cycle warranty started with sonnen and others started to copy. But other batteries are not built to be worked and used like a sonnen. sonnen designed batteries from day one to be a functional tool used daily versus a resource to be tapped into only when the power is disrupted. The battery industry is seeing more and more noise and imitators and cheap providers race to the bottom. Buyers should be wary and installers too. Dive into specs and details. Ask more questions and purchase the right tool for the desired outcome.

Russell, I am the marketing director for a solar distribution company. I just wanted to thank you for posting this video. It's incredibly helpful to hear first-hand experiences like this from the very people who are making solar a reality for the rest of us. I wish there was more content like this out there. I've been in solar for almost a decade now and have so much respect for the business owners who have to navigate the crazy ups and downs of this industry. Best of luck to you and the rest of the folks at Creative Solar.

Bullshit- this guy has no knowledge of a good battery. He is getting paid to push Enphase. 1 generac battery cabinet vs. 1 battery cabinet - Tesla gets killed also; Tesla left the state of Florida because they can not compete with Generac, where you need a battery to run your whole home. Tesla is less good a battery than Generac- Please listen carefully to his words. he is intentionally directing you to the worst choice of battery. IGNORE THIS IDIOT!

Don't buy Tesla powerwall - it can't be trusted to work if communications networks fail along with the grid (which is likely in a major storm). Internal WiFi backup systems hardly ever works reliably so at this point you can't even get information on the remaining charge because their is no status display on the Tesla Powerwall itself.

I would add the it depends on how long you're going to be in the house. Tesla is fine if you'll be leaving in a few years. IQ batteries don't get hot, and they last longer because of that. Regardless of the warranties, look at chemistry, then take a closer look at the warranties. IQ batteries are warranted for 10 years or 7300 FULL cycles. Last I checked, Tesla was ten years and 10,000 cycles. Tesla wins, right? Not even close to right. Tesla calls 10% DoD (depth of discharge) a "cycle" I hope you went with Enphase inverters, by the way. Then it's a real no-brainer. In my opinion, and I've been in renewables for 9 years, Enphase is the only choice any HOMEOWNER should ever consider for an inverter system. THE most reliable system ever built. If you want a battery that won't catch fire, and is actually available, IQ is the choice.

The thing that makes these both pricey is that there is no choice. You can't configure a larger inverter with a smaller battery. If the load requires a larger kW inverter but doesn't require a long kWh backup time, you're paying for a lot of battery capacity you don't need. The ratio of inverter power to battery capacity is fixed, not flexible.

Stay on a 2.4ghz wifi, they don't do well with mesh networks either if you know what that is. 5ghz or recognizes but bc 2.4ghz goes farther thats the best. The envoy should also stay where it was installed, never move it.

Another difference is that last Fall, Enphase began to allow their batteries to be recharged by permanently installed emergency generators. For those of us with insufficient room for enough PV panels recharge a battery, this is a major improvement. Tesla has shown no interest in generators and now only sells Powerwalls in conjunction with installation of their solar panels. I have a grid tied Powerwall. When I expand my system, I’ll be using Enphase batteries.

I'm confused. Using your example for monthly net metering, if I create 1000 kWh but use only 800 kWh in one month, should't I get a credit for 200 kWh? You're saying I will get billed for 100 kWh? I don't understand the math. Can you clarify?
@CreativeSolarUSA

Hey Ken it is Gustavo here, Yes so if we are speaking about the example in minute 4:45ish the example is: Produce (solar) 1000 kWh Send back 200 kWh during day New Balance +200 kWh However, we also used -300 kWh lets say at night 200 sent back during day - 300 kWhs used during night time= We now have a bill of about 100 kWh ($13) + fees of course

Creative Solar installed my panels & battery Nov. 2018. My average monthly electric bill is about $35. Here in Carroll EMC I receive about 3.5 cents/KHr for power sold back to the grid. I believe that Caroll EMC has a base fee of $30, but they incur costs for having power ready when I need it so I have no complaint about the discrepancy between my selling price and purchase price of electricity.

Net metering basically isn't working here for EMC. Between the reduction in KwH, they also charge for the service and a second meter, basically wiping out any profit. I typically get about $17 in credit after all their deductions. It makes sense to get a battery to store your overproduction rather than sell it back to them.
