Amazing video, going to follow these steps for my first display board! Question - can you be specific on ‘rust paint’? I get a lot of different results when searching my local Home Depot. What brand and product did you use?

Nice to see some actual scratchbuilding. I make up sets of toy soldiers to give away to less well off folks and I include details of how everything was made and recommendations for channels and websites they may find useful, yours has now been added to the list. I've been researching 'play' (which is way more complicated than we thought) and specifically imaginative play, which is very different from 'entertainment' (as offered by video games, play requires actual work). The big problem is the lack of actual toys out there, there is plenty of 'merchandising', often made to 'fits the box' scale so they cannot be combined and sold at inflated prices as long as they are still 'current' (so no way to expand the set over time). Fortunately decent realistic toy soldiers are still available cheaply (if you avoid the 'wargame' figures) and making terrain greatly enhances the play value. Incidentally the three most asked for sets are world war two, knights and knaves and sci-fi, the first is easy, the knights are more difficult and the sci-fi is very hard, but the feedback to date suggests the kids are enjoying them pretty much as we did 60+ years ago. One common complaint is 'I want my dining table back' and I work of the basis of a 4ft x 2ft space so everything stays within a child's reach. You can buy 2 inch foam in 4 x 2 'bats' and covered with newspaper and glue (felt if you are flush at the time) with packing tape then wound around the outside edges (sometimes with cut-down soft drink can on the corners) and painted it produces a super-light, highly portable 'battle board' (so it can be lifted off the dining table for the meal and then replaced with the armies still in place). I don't texture the surface as toy soldiers have small individual bases and tend to fall over on rough terrain. Just finished a fantasy village set with an enchanted forest for a little girl, I use 1:32 for younger kids and 1:72 for those over age 7 (when second order reasoning has kicked in) as those are an established standard not subject to 'scale creep' and generally the cheapest option. The Chinese [produce some interesting figure sets in 1:32 that can be used for fantasy and sci-fi, for 1:72 I use medievals and for sci-fi I use a mix of medievals and ancients (think Conan meets Star Wars). I had to make a unicorn for the small scale set but other than that it wasn't too difficult. I would encourage anyone who enjoys this kind of thing to make up the occasional set to give away, you get to make all those things you wanted when you were ten and you don't have to find space to store it. A decent set in 1:72 costs about £40 or $50 (including a couple of tanks, cheap 3d printed obscure cold war vehicles are handy for sci-fi) and with a lot of home-made terrain pieces it can make a big difference to a kid's Christmas.

Rust paint is the type of paint. Espresso is the colour. Satin or matte finish will work for this purpose.

if yiu dont have resin use use elmers liquid glue and slowly layer it pour,dry reaapeat
@immersiveterrain3 ай бұрын
This can work in a pinch...it will inherently come with more problems than the resin. I've done exactly as you suggest and been successful 75% of the time. Since resin pour is the last step usually, it could ruin the whole piece, wasting all your hard work. PVA not only shrinks a lot more than the resin...A LOT MORE...which inevitably leads to warping, but it can also bubble and crack...which doesn't really happen with the resin. But yes...it will work as a substitute. Just be aware of the downsides.

Hi...You flashed the paints by too fast. What was the sand mixture paint you used? DecorArts or something...didn't get the colour choice. The results are great and I have some unused corkboard right here! Cheers. Edit: Frame-by-frame! Cinnamon Brown!
@immersiveterrain6 ай бұрын
The reason I flipped it by so fast is because the brand is not important. It's an inexpensive water based acrylic. Insert your favourite brand here, kinda thing. As far as colour, that's also subject to preference. Whatever brown shades you like. I flip back and forth between cinnamon brown and burnt umber for pieces like this. Either is appropriate.

Really nice! :) How do you prevent the cork from warping? I do have trouble with that (used cork for some roads for use in Gaslands games).
@immersiveterrain3 ай бұрын
My most common cure for warping is to paint both sides simultaneously or successively before the previous side dries. This prevents one side from shrinking more than the other.

Nice looking!!!! What kind of resin do you use and how long does it take to dry?
@immersiveterrain8 ай бұрын
I've used a few different brands in the past. some were intended for workshop floors, some were intended for arts and crafts. I feel like it's all the same crap anyway. The only difference I can find is the mix ratio. I prefer ones that have a 1:1 mix ratio. Such is the case with the one I used in this video. To be honest I'm not sure of the dry time. whenever I use epoxy resin I leave it overnight at least, regardless of the brand. Hope that helps.

Beautiful work. Stunning. I’m always so afraid of resin leaking all over the place
@immersiveterrain9 ай бұрын
Thanks so much. If I could offer advice... Just make sure the edges are a consistent height. Or at least pay attention to how deep you pour it and make sure you don't pour over the lowest part of the edge. That sounds like a no s#!t sherlock, but that's where you want to focus your attention during the pour. If you're uncertain you can do a series of more shallow pours. Also as long as you seal in the bottom with the paint/mod Podge mix then nothing should leak through the cork. Thanks for watching!

What is the drywall compound for, to seal the cork? Is that an important step?
@immersiveterrain Жыл бұрын
Not only to seal the cork (which is an important step) but also to soften the edges between layers, as well as, creating ground texture. You can use it to create lumps and bumps as well. This way the flat areas don't have to be so flat. To go back to sealing it...I find the spackle works great at sealing the pores while not causing much warping. If you were to use glue or paint to seal the cork it would risk causing much more warping. I hope this answers your question. Thanks for watching.

If your going to apply PVA to the surface afterwards via the PVA/paint/sand mixture, what does the layer of joint compound beforehand do? Does it help to smooth out the surface a bit to remove the cork texture?
@immersiveterrain Жыл бұрын
It fills the porous cork making it so that the glue/paint mixture doesn't soak in too much which will also prevent the cork from warping once paint and glue are applied later on. The spackle also softens the edges between layers so that they're less abrupt. Thirdly (or I suppose fourthly) it can be used to add lumps and bumps to the large flat areas. So there are multiple advantages to the spackle layer.
