great video. do all the new electrolytic caps have film caps in parallel ? And, is there a formula for choosing the correct value for the film cap ?
@bennokaiser69821 күн бұрын
Thanks! Yes, all have 10nF film caps in parallel. With 10nF you are well inside the tolerance of the electrolytic caps. Mostly the size of capacitors is not critical: if a cap is bigger in the signal path you get more lows and if a cap is bigger in the power supply it means you get less ripple. Exception if caps are used in filter applications there the value must be as precise as possible. Liebe Grüsse Benno

By the way, I always try flip the phase on the headphones (parentheses or mic) to make sure I'm getting accurate sound in the cans. If I'm hearing it out of phase it's likely I'm not going to perform the same way I would hearing it accurately. This might be more appropriate for single mic recordings of say voice or individual instruments/instrumentalists. It seems like many of the ribbons I have require flipping of the phase to sound normal in the headphones.
@bennokaiser698Ай бұрын
I'm sadly not that sensitiv to phase. If I mix drums with some mikes on it, sure I check for phase issues, but with only two as OH I don't hear a difference. Liebe Grüsse Benno

@bennokaiser698 very excited hearing your ribbon mics recordings! Some of the best I've done have used the RCA 'veracoustic' series as overheads, (usually in A/B), and ribbon mics on all of the rest of the drums. Especially when using ribbon mics on other instruments I find it important to use them on the drums because if you use condensers the highs are going to mask the delicacy of the ribbons on the other instruments, voices etc. Again thank you so much for promoting ribbons, I also feel that the architecture of typical figure of eight ribbons is very favorable for the "shape" of the sounds, no backplate to interfere with the movement of the element. Of course the best condenser microphones have modified back plates to allow the diaphragm to move more freely and avoid standing waves etc. but those are kind of custom drilled back plates aren't they?

@TiqueO6Ай бұрын
Yes the exaggerated highs of the condensers cause the muscles in the ear canals to contract around the tiny hairs, (I forgotten the name of those), and it takes a while for them to relax, if you give a little time with the volume not too loud the ribbon recording will start to sound normal again. Try this the next time there's a blast of feedback and you sound underwater for a while, put your fingers in your ears immediately after the blast and let them stay there for 15 to 30 seconds, somehow when you take your fingers out you'll hear back to normal again, my theory is that there are no new sounds coming in to keep the protective response on alert.
@benjipage719Ай бұрын
I think you can just listen to the 2 and enjoy the condensers more if they are pleasing to your ears 🤷♂️
@TiqueO6Ай бұрын
@@benjipage719 yes, some condensers are "tuned" to sound more natural but I've found most of them to be overly bright. Well that was an advantage in the old days when we had signal loss in the signal path it's not so much an issue these days, ribbons give us a chance to catch up to Natural sound again. It's wild there was a Neumann condenser fairly recently that claimed it was tuned to sound more "natural" like a ribbon. That should tell us a lot.
