Great video! Thanks for mentioning cyclist. I'm watching with the intent to ride through there this weekend (I'll watch out for 4 wheelers too). Thanks for the info and great shots of the road conditions, now I can make a good tire choice😀. Love the little trail map on screen and commentary on history, camping etc. I believe the red trees are Madrone (though ill see for myself) Manzanita are smaller and kinda more bush like.

@@Squirlybumrush thanks for watching & commenting! You may well be correct on the trees - the red color is very striking. I do love reading up on the history and geology of these dirt backroads, the Klau and Buena Vista mines in particular were very surprising (that it is an EPA Superfund and the impact on the area esp Lake Nacimiento).

I lived in the canyon to the left of the gate at the end of the road from 1984-1987. Lots of trouble came from that direction, and my sign in those days said, "Hunters will be hunted". The local sheriff made me take it down. Rough country, great people in that area. From Google earth, it looks like someone is once again living up there.
@fourwheeltravel

Thanks for commenting! There are 2 signs on the gate right now, one polite and one with F-bombs. I’m sure there are good reasons for the sign. We’ve owned property on the continuation of that road since ‘97, but many (understandably) locked gates block access from the other end. The W15 is a real curiosity!
@billclancy4913

@@fourwheeltravel My legal access in those days was from Jolon Road, off Argyle Road, if you know that area. It was 7+ miles of dirt that way to Hall Canyon where I was staying. W15 was the back way out, better access to Lockwood, the other way was better access to Fort Hunter Liggett where I worked in those days.

@@billclancy4913very familiar with the area. W15 would be a heck of a commute, hairy in places. Passage through there from Argyle is not really possible now without passing too many locked gates, unfortunately.

It's eleven and a half miles. I had the good fortune to spend several years driving it. It's not a good idea for tourists to travel on the road, and it's not a tourist-friendly road for urban drivers. Mike! Mike Trotter, fourth generation.

Thanks for your comment. We’d agree, and as noted in the description and in the video, “We would recommend a high-clearance vehicle. The road is rutted in places, and rocky in others. We would strongly advise against attempting this without at least all-terrain tires, and four-wheel drive or at least all-wheel drive is recommended. The road is impassable when wet, and if you've traveled this route, you will know why - there are shelf roads with sheer drops of hundreds of feet interspersed throughout the track, and there's no way I'd want to be out here in slippery conditions!”

A lot of spurs/side roads/primative camp sites. Just leave it like you found it.
