Back in the 90's some guy invented a metal sponge that would absorb hydrogen like crazy, and release it as the metal was heated. No need to pressurize the hydrogen and it could take in more hydrogen than the pressure tanks of that time! I found it an amazing invention. Some oil company bought the patent and buried it.

I would buy a Toyota. Hydrogen is the future. Soon there will be tax on carbon fuels in every major city travel. The problem with combustion engines (any fuel, even hydrogen) is they force nitrogen and oxygen to combine under heat and pressure of the combustion, and produce smog. NO and NO2 are both toxic. Hydrogen fuel cells don't produce anything but water. There is no combustion.

If one of my close neighbors had an EV, I'd be worried. I frequently use parking garages, and I'm starting to worry about them, too. More and more with every passing day, you hear about EV's catching on fires. If anything happened to my car today, I'd be in serious trouble, because I cannot afford to buy another car

As a retired engineer, I agree with you. Batteries are not the answer but a band-aid solution. The future is Hydrogen fuel cell technology. All major heavy equipment manufacturers are using that instead of batteries. That includes big transport ocean going ships. The technology has been around longer than any lithium battery. It requires platinum which we also need to build catalytic converters for gas powered cars. It can be refueled as fast, if not faster than gasoline or diesel cars. A range of 1000Km on one tank of compressed hydrogen has been demonstrated. It's 100Km/1Kg Hydrogen. No other fuel comes even close to the energy density per weight as of hydrogen.
@Trashed2065912 күн бұрын
where do we get highly volatile hydrogen? And where are these affordable fuel cells right now? Because we don't have "a few more years" to develop that. We need solutions today, and batteries are providing one. They are being improved in ways that address their shortcomings, so you can't say they will always have those issues. Even as they are now, they work well for automobiles, so why say we should switch to another solitary source of fuel just because batteries may not be a good fit for heavy equipment? You can charge batteries from hydroelectric, nuclear, fossil fuel, solar and wind. If we just switch to another burnable fuel, even a clean one, we are locked into another ecosystem, and hydrogen has been proving itself to be very dangerous to contain and control. Fuel Cell fires are dangerous. No thanks. On a rare instance where batteries catch fire, it builds slowly, so people can exit the vehicle safely.
