I have to disagree. Mothership itself is a pretty good example of a game with Initiative front and center; in Mothership you roll wether if you go before or after the NPCs, that’s it, but in Mothership, because of it being pretty deadly, this means a lot! So, Initiative matters, even to the game that purportedly doesn’t have it. I might be biased though, my personal combat system is called Initiative after all.

You should give that Engine you built a name and we need a generic kind of Call of Cthulhu Game with those mechanics.

Tedious, repetitive, never ending combat is the reason why I only played DnD 5e once. Even though I really like the gm´s portrait of the Npc, the world, story and the group per se. But I just couldn't force myself through this again. I can´t explain to myself how this game is so popular. compared to many other tarps like Numenera, Dungeon World, Call of Cthulhu, basically every powered by the Apocalypse game etc...

What about the 6th T - "Twist". This is the counter to the Trick. It's something that reveals itself midway, making the combat more threatening than initially thought. Maybe the monster can regenerate. Stab the spider and a bunch of babies come out, etc.

I like the simplicity of just making a combat roll to attack. But I can't get past the notion that WHAT you are attacking has no bearing on how hard it is to succeed. I also can't imagine an rpg can get by without a contest roll system even existing.

Lovely to see the story being played. When you show the character sheet, you have both numbers in the circles of the stats and saves, what are the numbers under? Is it just that you have both character's states written out?

"If you like tactical combat, you probably like initiative." You could be more wrong, but I don't know how. Turn based combat is to tactical combat what phrenology is to neurology.

One rule I like to use to determine how much time (in seconds) each player has to decide their actions is by adding their Intelligence score + 3. I read it as their quick thinking allowing them to better access the situation and thus making better use of their turn. Also, that makes Intelligence less of a dump stat for any class but the wizard.

Great video! I really loved Popcorn Initiative for many years. One time initiative and then everyone passes a weapon, usually a flail or axe that we slammed into the table when it was our "turn". Currently, we're using one d6 on either side of the screen. The players can go at any time they wish if it is their sides turn. Each player takes turns rolling for their side...TIES mean everyone goes at once, at the same time!!! Though we will resolve individually, this changes up the tactics on those rounds. It works for my current table because I see the dread in everyone's eyes when we are squaring up to roll, And if the baddies went last in the previous round if they win that round they know that they are about to get some more HP deductions, etc. It causes a reaction in my players which is exciting. The everyone roles initiative and do initiative order each round is boring as F. Again great video! Looking forward to seeing more!

a few years ago I was admin of the lamentations of the flame princess discord. I had joined the Mothership discord and had spoken to the devs quite a bit, they seemed very nice. The girlfriend of Zak, a LotFP adventure writer, posted a huge allegation of physical, verbal, and sexual abuse against Zak. Immediately most of the OSR devs sided with the girlfriend and I said in the LotFP discord, not the mothership discord, “We need to hear both sides of the story before this turns into a witch hunt and Zak is wrongfully cancelled.” Well this exploded with negative reaction because most of the OSR devs follow the: BELIEVE ALL WOMEN! Mindset. I wasn’t saying she was lying I said we needed to be logical and get all the facts. The mods of the mothership discord went to other OSR discord I was in and tried to get me kicked out. I was banned from the mothership discord. To this day I have tried many times to talk with the seemingly friendly devs of Mothership and they wont let me. You either cancel what turned out to be an innocent man or you aren’t one of them. So, after Zak got proof that the girlfriend was lying nothing has changed. Zak is taking everyone to court that tried to cancel him. Most of those devs you’ve probably heard of. The dev of electric Bastionland, the dev of Gardens of Ynn, Mothership, and lots more. I don’t hate the mothership devs, but I’m a customer and was mistreated so every chance I get I warn people about these devs. I’d love to talk with the devs and put this behind us. I’d delete every post I made online, but I know they won’t talk to me. Maybe this new edition will sell enough copies to cover their legal fees when Zak takes them to court.

Yeah narrative makes sense for story telling and immersion - but what about Rogue and Monks ? They've choose class where beeing first is important. Rogue Assasin ? Always will attack first ? Thst's OP. Always attak later ? That kills it sublclass ;)
