Hey Chutney, there is a gym in Jamestown, the Wellness Holistic Therapies, located in Brewery Yard. This is their FB Page: facebook.com/wellnesstherapiesmatatoki There is also a gym that operates in Half Tree Hollow, based at the community centre there. In the past there also used to be a gym at Prince Andrew School but not heard much about that in recent years, suspect it may no longer be operating. Good luck with you interview 😊

Hi Simon, thanks for stopping by our channel and your comment 👍 You may be interested to know the population of St Helena has actually remained fairly consistent over the last 15 years or so, generally just above the 4,000 mark. The latest data on the SHG website shows 'Resident on-island' population at the end of October 2024 at 4,058. Ten years ago, Oct 2014, it was 4,487. In March 2015 the population peaked at 4,603 and has since slowly declined to where we are today. Generally speaking, there is more of a concern on St Helena about population decline, rather than being over populated. All the best from St Helena.

Hi Anele, thanks for viewing the video and taking the time to comment👍 Because of the many other comments we've taken on this channel, we are assuming your comment is making a similar reference, so will reply in kind, but if forgive us if you mean something totally different🙏 So, it's a common misconception that St Helena was seized by the British from indigenous people. St Helena was actually uninhabited when it was discovered in 1502, by the Portuguese. Although various nations would stop by over the years, the first settlement was not established for more than 150 years later, in 1657, by the British. The island remains British today. Thanks again for visiting our channel, best wishes to you from St Helena 🌅😊

@@Anelecharles As mentioned already, St Helena was completely uninhabited when discovered in 1502 and the first people stepped ashore. No one settled here until 1657. It didn't belong to anyone and no one was displaced. Hope that clarifies the history.

@whatthesaintsdidnext
@whatthesaintsdidnext 11 күн бұрын
@ourhandsaretied although not mandatory, the wearing of seatbelts has informally become somewhat standard now, for various reasons. Many of the modern vehicles have audible alarms if the seatbelt isn't buckled. And for people who have lived for any period of time overseas have this habit now inbuilt. But yes, to your point, it is probably time to have this safety feature passed into law 😊 Thanks for viewing the video and your feedback 👍

Hi D23, thanks for sharing your thoughts with us - well that's certainly a new perspective that we haven't heard before, which is a really interesting way to look at it. Having lived in the UK ourselves for a few years we can appreciate how the size, location and apparent isolation of St Helena could, at first glance, seem 'unappealing.' Island life is not for everyone, but it doesn't mean everyone is unhappy or pining for a move to the 'big world.' There is a lot to be grateful for living on St Helena, including no air pollution, a clean ocean for both recreation and food source not to mention the therapeutic benefits of waking up every day and seeing the sea, no violent crime, amazing outdoor environment for hiking, a cloud forest that contains more than 250 endemic species of plants & invertebrates and much more. Hopefully you may get to visit one day and we will get the opportunity to share with you some of these facets of our island life. Thanks again for checking out the channel and your comment, all the best 😊🌅

@ i have lived in Scotland for 5 years on a isolated peninsula, Dunoon. I had to live there because of some special circumstance, but I would classify that period the darkest period of my existence. That place has a population of about 5000 people, nothing to do there as a young person, everything is the same every day, everything it’s expensive because of the position of the village. Horrible place to live there, second rainiest place in Europe, thick layer of dark clouds ALL THE TIME, you don’t really see the sun too many days in a year, rain pretty much every day, cold and dark for 10 months of the year. There is only ONE street with few really small shops you can find and 3 pubs, hospital is just there, but the doctors are not working there, you will find just 2-3 nurses that are under prepared for the job, I was in shock when I was there. You can barely see any people walking around on the streets…just old people in the village and nothing to do with your life. You have no opportunity for jobs or for growth, no university, there is only one bank that is open few hours per week, gas station close at 10pm and all the village shuts down at around at 4pm. Gym is open until 8pm and this saved my life, because I was going there almost everyday. You have to take a boat every time when you have to go to a bigger city but a lot of times in the second part of the year the boat will not operate because of the horrible windy weather or you have to go around the water by car but you have to drive about 2 hours and all these take time and money. There is no way you could succeed in that place, lots of alcohol addiction and drugs….just a bad place to be or to be born and I’m sorry for the people that live there.

We've just looked up Dunoon, watched a short video by Jochen Allardice-Grein kzbin.info/www/bejne/pZ2nm3SQec-We6M and to us it looks like a fascinating place to visit. The takeaway here is probably that island life (or isolated places to be more accurate) isn't for everyone, so perhaps you may not enjoy St Helena after all. Thanks for your comment and introducing us to a new place. All the very best 😊

Imagine if all small towns rejected big corporations or just franchises? You don't need to be surrounded by sea to make your own rules! Why has the app shut down??
@whatthesaintsdidnext
@whatthesaintsdidnext 14 күн бұрын
The Inside St Helena app was a private sector venture to improve the marketing and communications that would make it easier for both visitors and residents to connect with local businesses, organisations and events/attractions. However, the island's ecosystem operates in a way that the St Helena government actually competes against the local, private sector enterprises, which has made it unviable to continue running the app. This issue and its detrimental effects to small business development is well-known on St Helena and openly acknowledged at all levels, including at formal Legislative Council sessions for years now, and also by the St Helena Chamber of Commerce. Although the need for an anti-competition policy to address the problem has been acknowledged and discussed within the government since at least 2018, there does not appear to be the will to make it happen. A 'recent' deadline of September 2023 to have the policy in place, given at the start of that year by the Minister for Treasury & Economic Development, came and went and still nothing. We're now a few days away from 2025!

Yes Julian, good spot👍. A number of other viewers have also brought this to our attention in earlier comments. This was an unfortunate oversight on our part in proofing, right from the initial writing stage. Our intention, and what we should have said, was you can find familiar brands to those available in British shops! Following that earlier feedback we made a correction in the onscreen closed-captions (visible when enabled) to note that Kellogg's and Heinz are actually US brands. Glad to hear you enjoyed the rest of the video. Best wishes from St Helena 😊

@whatthesaintsdidnext
@whatthesaintsdidnext 19 күн бұрын
Agreed, Pete 👍 As we've mentioned in previous comments to others, unfortunately the island has failed to establish a proper public transport system over the years, which, in our opinion, would make an enormous difference in addressing this particular issue. The terrain makes walking or cycling around impractical for normal day-to-day tasks, such as getting to work, grocery shopping, etc., so most people/households tend to own a vehicle for such things. Pozdrav Ivane, hvala ti na posjeti našem kanalu i tvom komentaru.
