Would have been nice to have the goods take up the whole part of the screen instead of having the logos on the right side which don’t really add anything to the overall content. Watching this on a phone is painful :-)

I've been using only acrylics for the base, mid's & high's for highlights & shadows. I use acrylic glaze medium to thin the highlights & shadows and wet blend (also using a liberal amounts of retarder). This method using oil looks to be much easier and more effective. I have seen videos of people using oils, but don't really do a great job explaining how to. I think now I understand it enough to give it a shot now. Although I think I might experiment with starting with a zenithal priming. Just to see how it turns out (I use "plastic army" men for my figure "mules" 🤓😜). Thank you Sir for sharing this video. It is very educational, easy to follow and helps to build a little confidence.

If you're going to use Vallejo Model Color you really should check out Golden Fluid Acrylics. They come in about 70 colors and are sold by Blick and other art house stores. Golden pioneered acrylics for artists in the 50s and remains at the top of the field. You can check the whole line at Blick's web site. You'll notice the 1 oz bottles are mostly about $4.75 (but considerably larger than the Vallejo 17ml) but some are nearly twice that. The expensive paints have costly pigments and are usually made for mixing. They also come in a variety of opacity which could be invaluable for figure painting. The consistency of Golden Fluids is very much like Vallejo Model Color. They also sell their equivalent of Vallejo Model Air called Golden High Flow. High Flow has been my "go to" airbrush acrylic for two years and has no peer in the world of water based acrylics. (Golden Fluids, like Vallejo Model Color can be easily airbrushed if you have Airbrush Medium - just remember that the pigment load will be a little lower.) Like Vallejo Golden has a 100% acrylic polymer agent and hence is non-toxic and non-flammable. Mediums are available to extend drying time. Mr. Youngquist is quite right that acrylics will do about any job in modeling. He's also right about using decent brushes - not sure you'd need sable but if the brush is less than $5 it's not good enough. And I'd agree about sizes, although I find 00 useful along with 0, 1/0 and 2/0. BTW: Vallejo Model Color is also now sold by Blick for much lower prices than you'd find in any modeling place. Modelers pay a lot of extra money for the every increasing blizzard of paints and weathering products most of which is available at the art store in better quality and much less money. You can buy Sennelier Pigments - arguably the best oil paint maker in the business - for as low as $11 for 140 grams for the kind of pigments any modeler would use. Also thumbs up on auto primers - Brite Touch is enamel and is probably fine for a figure. I use black Duplicolor sandable & fillable lacquer thinner which is simply dynamite for handling slight scratches, gaps etc and costs about $5 for a 12oz can. Again, half the price of a model brand primer.

It's unfortunate that more people don't use oils for miniatures. Apparently people's attention span has been reduced to nothing and they can't wait for the drying time. And others just have a fear of using oil paints. Oils are so much more versatile and my results are always better. But look how few videos there are about oil painting miniature figures. Very unfortunate... As for this video it would have been much better if the videographer would have just shut the hell up. It's a major annoyance in watching an otherwise helpful video.

Thanks Dave, that was really helpful. I am just getting back in to modelling after a short 30 year gap! Some really useful advice and food for thought . Some of the basic things make so much sense when they are spelt out (I have been trying to fit dioramas to the base and it is good to hear that I am not alone in this ) Great use of cats in the presentation, especially the S.A.M. cat at the end with smoke coming out of it's butt, I might try and incorporate that in to a diorama with your permission ; )

Hey Rob, Jeremy from eaglequest. Sorry we didn't get together at the end of the show, I cut out about 30 min before the end as my back was killing me. Anyhow, I was watching "Saving Pvt Ryan" yesterday and got the notion to do a dio of the ruined city in France at the last 3/4 of the movie. The part where they are getting ready for the krauts to enter the town. This would be a huge undertaking and I would expect 2 yrs at least. I picked up a Mini Art dio, that would get it started however the rest would be scratch built. Thoughts? idea's, and recommends. (want to get in on, would be a show winner/stopper time after time!) Could also include the bridge. Other than that I am pushing your book, writing reviews and such where I can. By the way, I picked up a copy, love it. wish I'd have gotten you to sign it, perhaps later. 469-994-8777 whenever you're in the big D call me and we'll get out on the town.

The last time I built a model was when I was about twelve. A plane of some sort. That was back in the 70s. Last year I thought I'd give it a go again, with my son. Got on KZbin to see what I could learn before spending a fortune, and MY GOD, look what you people can do ! The stuff Mike shows on this clip, I think is just amazing. To get that level of detail on a face that small ! Nice one mate. By the way. The plane I made when I was twelve, ended up having a hole drilled through one wing attached to ten feet of string, fuselage filled with petrol, and me and my mate having great fun twirling a very realistic burning bomber before the string let go and his mum's washing went up in flames. Looks like I'm going to be spending a fortune.

Mike, Excellent work and a brilliant presentation. Thank you so much. The right mix of essential theory (context), goal (purpose) and practice (execution). I have been searching for a fortnight to find a step by step to understand face painting in oils and you have gone a hundred steps further. Lots to practice, lots to remember and a helluva lot of fun in improving the outcomes. Thank you for spending your time and effort in helping improve the skills and outcomes of many of us stumbling, bumbling wannabees! This is excellent motivation and proof we can all do better.

I have already watched this twice. Great vid Mike. Your style of presentation is much better than most out there. I agree; getting back into the hobby I need a slow drying medium to get the best results. Looking forward to giving the acrylic base with oil blending a try.

Awesome tutorial...thank you! Question...can rubbing alcohol be used as a thinner for acrylics?
@jeremystuckey81537 жыл бұрын
Yes it can, works great. Stay away from window cleaner though, the ammonia will eat away at the airbrush. One thing Rob talks about is you/us trying new things, experiment. Met Rob last weekend at a show, super nice guy. He also has a book out "Airbrushing and weathering techniques" very worthwhile getting, a ton of info that is easy and practical to do.

At last, somebody has shown the best way to do figures. Now we will see figures that have sheen to skin like humans are supposed to have. Acrylics have their place but cannot give you a lifelike color to flesh, leather or animals.
@dipsy55559 жыл бұрын
+Gordon Enquist - of course acrylics can provide impresion of lifelike colours, but there are only 3-5 people worldwide who are able to paint with acrylics providing such an effect.. oils IMHO can help "normal" people achieve great results within quite short time of training..
