If you're going to use Vallejo Model Color you really should check out Golden Fluid Acrylics. They come in about 70 colors and are sold by Blick and other art house stores. Golden pioneered acrylics for artists in the 50s and remains at the top of the field. You can check the whole line at Blick's web site. You'll notice the 1 oz bottles are mostly about $4.75 (but considerably larger than the Vallejo 17ml) but some are nearly twice that. The expensive paints have costly pigments and are usually made for mixing. They also come in a variety of opacity which could be invaluable for figure painting. The consistency of Golden Fluids is very much like Vallejo Model Color. They also sell their equivalent of Vallejo Model Air called Golden High Flow. High Flow has been my "go to" airbrush acrylic for two years and has no peer in the world of water based acrylics. (Golden Fluids, like Vallejo Model Color can be easily airbrushed if you have Airbrush Medium - just remember that the pigment load will be a little lower.) Like Vallejo Golden has a 100% acrylic polymer agent and hence is non-toxic and non-flammable. Mediums are available to extend drying time. Mr. Youngquist is quite right that acrylics will do about any job in modeling. He's also right about using decent brushes - not sure you'd need sable but if the brush is less than $5 it's not good enough. And I'd agree about sizes, although I find 00 useful along with 0, 1/0 and 2/0. BTW: Vallejo Model Color is also now sold by Blick for much lower prices than you'd find in any modeling place. Modelers pay a lot of extra money for the every increasing blizzard of paints and weathering products most of which is available at the art store in better quality and much less money. You can buy Sennelier Pigments - arguably the best oil paint maker in the business - for as low as $11 for 140 grams for the kind of pigments any modeler would use. Also thumbs up on auto primers - Brite Touch is enamel and is probably fine for a figure. I use black Duplicolor sandable & fillable lacquer thinner which is simply dynamite for handling slight scratches, gaps etc and costs about $5 for a 12oz can. Again, half the price of a model brand primer.
