Thanks for this. Good insight. Would love to know a little more about creating a LUT for a specific camera? How would i set up a pipeline if i was working in a particular colour space, like either Aces or DWG?....and i was doing it for a specific camera like a Sony or Red? I know that there are certain tools within Davinci that cannot/do not translate onto a LUT....can this be compensated for? Not a problem if you don't get the time to do this as i know these video take some planning, etc, but it could be interesting. Thanks again for sharing. Enjoyed watching. (New Subscriber) 👍

It's great to see how thorough you were in your review - great job! I do agree with your concerns, especially about the dramatic curve of the RGB split of the profiles. I've had the perpetual license for Dehancer for a while but I find that it's really difficult to get a good-looking result. The well-recognised profiles don't look as you would expect, as you stated. But the Bloom and some of the other texture features are great. Hi about the mismatch between ACES and DWG. I think the main difference you see here is actually because you are comparing Resolve CST with DaVinci Tonemapping to ACES Transform with ACES ODT. The extreme difference in contrast and rendering of edge case colors like the neon lights are a result of comparing two totally different ODTs. Dehancers color management is therefore out of the equation. I also wouldn't apply Luminance Mapping and Gamut Compression in the ACES stream, because you didn't use those in the CST stream either
@thedouglasdutton17 күн бұрын
Thanks for your input. However I disagree : In their documentation, Dehancer is advocating that color managed workflows (Aces and DWG) are fully supported and therefore, Dehancer is applied at the scene level. Which means the DRT of either Aces or DWG follows which of course have their own characteristics. I think they should either compensate for the mismatch at the profile level in scene space or impose their own DRT as an output of their pluggin. Regarding tone map and gamut compression, I'm applying in nodes what would be applied if the project level colour management was used.
@NOIRGRADE17 күн бұрын
@@thedouglasdutton to compare both workflows you would still need to null out the difference in ODTs. You could use the DaVinci DRT with ACEScct easily. Dehancer can't know which DRT you use afterwards. And if Dehancer would want to compensate for the difference between the two DRTs it would have to reverse the ACES ODT and then apply the DaVinci DRT which is a blackbox. So there would be no way to actually achieve this.
@thedouglasdutton15 күн бұрын
@@NOIRGRADE You have a point mate. I think they should still either compensate for the DRTs because when we use a colour management framework, it has its own DRT by default. Or allow us to output something else than what we input : if we input Aces CCT / AP1, it would be nice if we could output 709 and thus deactivate the colour management DRT. The second option would be simpler to put in place I imagine and would remove the guess work. That being said, In my opinion, this whole thing isn't clear and the documentation provided is misleading.

@@thedouglasdutton Tbh I see a bigger problem with their implementation of ACES, that is not suited for HDR delivery. Last time I checked (about half a year ago) Dehancer had serious clamping issues in the highlights when setting it up for ACES. So using it for SDR was already non-ideal. For HDR just totally useless.
@NOIRGRADE3 күн бұрын
Hi again. I checked out the free demo of the latest version again and their implementation of ACES is still the way I rembered from last time. What they basically do internally is convert ACEScct to Rec709 (the official ODT with tonemapping and clamping etc.), then do their color stuff and then convert back with the official inverse ODT (Rec709 to ACEScct). Also their exposure tool is simply a gain operation in Rec709. You can easily recreate this by rebuilding this pipeline with the ACES Transform OFX. You will get the same results in regards to the clamping. The official ACES transforms are not perfectly inverseable to begin with. But the fact Dehancer works in Rec709 internally negates the entire purpose of working color managed in ACES with the option of exporting to bigger color spaces for HDR.

@Zizos29 күн бұрын
I agree, right now it reminds me of Lumetri in Pr. A simplified do it all thing for the newcommers. They should give more settings to finesse the split tone and the contrast/tone. Also the pivot point of Split Tone is at .3. Isn't DWG mid gray at .336? Sure it's not that far off but it should update depending on the color space used at the top. And the contrast has no pivot point which should again vary depending on the chosen color space + a custom option. It's weird they spent so much time for their own tools and got the pivot points wrong or non existent with a weak split tone. It almost feels they did it purposefully to not impact 3rd party DCTL creators. Speaking of which, there are some phenomenal tools out there, not just for creating but for monitoring exposure, colors, sat, skin. Hopefully this was just dipping their toes and they'll give us more.
@thedouglasdutton29 күн бұрын
Thanks for your feedback Zizos! You make a great point regarding the split one pivot. The contrast pivot seems to be linked to the tone curve you select as it seems to be updating properly. I think we need to give this tool some time and I'm sure they'll add some nice updates to give us more control :)

Plesso can you give us more info about why you use ACES instead of the “more usual” with two CST nodes, the first beeing the camera color Spaces to DWG+gamma and the last one beeing from DWG+gamma into rec709+gamma ? What advantages you are finding using ACES ? Thanks. PS: I’ll be in Paris this week end … suggestions about events ? 😂
@thedouglasduttonАй бұрын
Hey David! Actually using Aces in this specific way is the standard way to use it. Using nodes is a different approach of the exact same protocol. Also it can be easy to do something wrong when using nodes so if you're at beginning of your grading journey, I'd recommend to stick to colour management. Now about events in Paris you can check websites such as "parisbouge" or even "mairie de paris" to see what's going on ;)

Hello Douglas: Thank you again for another helpful video. I am new to color management (you may remember I wrote a comment in one of your prior videos that I have moved from Final Cut Pro to DVR), so please forgive my ignorance with color management. However, when you were discussing the choices available in the Color Science drop down (1:20 in your video), you said, “choose ACEScct.” In that drop down box, there was another ACES choice: ACEScc. When would one choose ACEScc instead of ACEScct? In other words, while I appreciate your telling us what to choose, I’d like to know why we choose ACEScct over ACEScc. I always find myself asking, “Why do I choose a particular setting over another?” Once I know WHY I choose a setting, then I understand when to use that choice and when NOT to use that choice. Again, thank you for a great video. I love learning DVR!😊
@thedouglasduttonАй бұрын
Yeah you're totally right to ask that question Jay! Basically, Aces CCT was released after Aces CC. They differ in their log encoding curve. The "T" in CCT stands for Toe. And that allows to mimic the feel of grading in other popular Log encodings like Cineon or Arri log C3 etc. That might sound a little overwhelming and technical but basically I know nobody who grades in Aces CC. It's been known for causing some limitations when shaping the contrast of your image. So go straight for CCT ;)
