Fantastic artist, amazing complex perosnality ... the energy of this woman is soooo specific, and they gave Angelina Jolie the total opposite in every way to play her. So disappointing

I read that Leoncavallo wanted him for the premier of Pagliacci as Tonio but Battistini said it lacked a significant aria for him. So Leoncavallo wrote the Prologue we hear here.

A bass voice unique in its time for its timbre of depth, sonority, magnificent power & yet still capable of an additional dark lyricism when required. Unfortunately his equally gargantuan appetite for food & alcohol ended his career & life at only 44 years.

Grandissimo Titta Ruffo (non capisco quella "eee" sull'acuto), modello di bella voce, chiarezza, modernità per il suo tempo, immascheramento del suono. Ciò non toglie affatto che altri baritoni possano essere straordinari in questo brano.

It is a shame they did not line up Anita Cerquetti to substitute for Callas who was singing Norma in Naples at the time.

If one reads this lovely poem in Italian, one can clearly see that Titto Ruffo was living the role, and putting all his feelings and nuances into it. So it was a truly beautiful, moving song of poetry. Sometimes we forget that this is what truly great singers were doing, pouring their heart through the words. And people who heard them in live singing loved them and were very moved. Nowadays seems there is too much emphasis on the externals and technique, missing the soul of the music and why it was written at all. Rather than nit pick this detail and this register, etc. let us become one with the music and performer. This brings out the full glory of what you just heard with Tito Ruffo.
