I have to say, I often find myself siding with Toad, as he reminds me a lot of myself at 7, 8 or 9 years of age, and I love his defiance of the stuffy old Badger 🙂. Some of he comebacks, eg, "Oooh you're in a mood, aren't you?" are quite spot-on!

Absolutely Amazing ! David Jason is the best Toad ! I really enjoyed 3D or Not 3D, seeing Barry Purves talk about Wind in the Willows, Achilles and ScreenPlay. I also loved seeing the models for Noddy’s Toyland Adventures. It was very inspiring! I recently did an oil painting of Paul Berry and an Ink Marker drawing of Toad in his Gondolier outfit from The Yuletide Entertainment.

Absolutely fantastic. Thank you so much for this. The amount of work that went into each minute of these programs was astounding. Very much enjoyed listening to the interviews. I liked Richard Pearson the most. To think that he, Mole, was a Lt. Colonel in WW2. I also find it remarkable that for WITW they recorded the voices first. The innate sense the voice actors had for their characters was impressive.

I genuinely believe that Sir David Jason's portrayal of Toad is one of the most seminal performances, setting a standard for all actors to aspire to. What Sir David achieved was transforming an insufferable character into someone truly lovable, all through the power of his performance-not simply by playing a typical upper-class toff. His work in this role is, in my opinion, criminally underrated and should undoubtedly rank among the best performances of his illustrious career. On a side note, it's surreal to reflect on how 'Only Fools and Horses' was once perceived, and now it's considered one of the greatest British comedies of all time.

Wow! Some great photos here, I especially like the ones showing the sets. I’m a huge fan and regularly still watch series, it’s my happy place. Do you know whether any of the sets are still in existence? Would be a dream to see them. Keep the videos coming, I love seeing your enviable collection and also your personal drawings. I look forward to hearing more about your book!

What a treat for Christmas! Thank you, Richard. This was all new and thrilling for a lifelong fan to see. Thanks so much for sharing it all! The premiere of the film with most of the cast and those lovely costumes in colour took my breath away! Why Fremantle couldn't include this is on the box set is such a travesty. The Toad Hall set at Animation World was incredible too

How would they have done the tear on Ratty's face? I assume it would involve a transition from stop motion to real-time footage where the droplet is placed and allowed to run down.

wonderful video richard, I've always been keen on the railway engines used in the film do U have any knowledge about the railway engine props they used? and for one thing, it also looks to me as if the used hornby model engines in some shots.

Hi there! My Father is Christopher Holt, the owner of Arden Sculptures and sculptor of the originals. It’s been lovely to see you do this overview. My childhood was filled with wondering around the factory, seeing my Dad create these designs and watching the painters and various people packaging the sculptures. Dad’s nearly 82 now, sadly the company ran into issues and struggled to compete - especially with cheaper products coming that weren’t manufactured in the UK. I’m still so proud of my dad’s work, he was a talented artist. It’s lovely to see people still get enjoyment from the pieces all these years later - means a lot.

Beautiful collection. I was annoyed too when I saw Disney were taking credit on that poster, typical Disney, but it's a wonderful illustration all the same. In the original photo, we also saw Toad Hall in the background I recently acquired the first poster you showcased myself. I've had it a few months and been struggling to find the right size of frame for it. This is Aaron from the group btw. Hi! 🐸

Hey Richard. Hope you had a nice birthday. The little badge on Badger's lapel has illustrations of cricket bats. It's usually seen on his brown coat in the Series and film. I love these. More than the Arden ones. What strikes me personally, is Ratty, Mole and Badger have their newest look/paintjob from A Tale of Two Toads/Oh Mr Toad! etc. But Toad isn't that yellow. He sort of looks like an earlier Toad from Series 2/ early Series 3 in regards to the colours of his skin. His eyes need to be more of a blood orange too. Maybe they were originally and they faded over time? Also Badger's fingers are completely covered in black fur in the series. He has hands like Mole on the figurine version. I know what you mean about the details on Ratty's jacket. He does wear a completely blue jacket sometimes though. Like in "The Yuletide Entertainment" etc. But regardless of a few odd colour choices, these figurines are gorgeous. I love them so much and you are lucky to have them. The detail of the sculpts are spectacular! 🐸🦡

Hey Baz, many thanks - I had a lovely birthday, thanks. Thanks for the insight into badger's pin - I should have realized! 😆 I totally see what you mean regarding the paint work - Toad certainly does feel like an earlier version. There have a photo somewhere of them painted up much more brightly - I'll try to dig it out. They are lovely figurines overall. I do wish they were more widely available.

Thank you for these commentaries (well, they're much more than commentaries) Richard. I saw only a couple of episodes on TV here in Australia back in the 1980's. I was overjoyed to discover there are 4 series + the film(s). Sometimes I think that looking behind the curtain to see how these things are made can spoil them a little bit, but the techniques are too clever not to be curious. I have always loved stop-motion animation, particularly pre computer interference & for me, this version of TWITW is right at the top. They are magical & evoke an England sadly long gone. I imagine there is an Agatha Christie or Sherlock Holmes mystery being solved in one of the great halls or estates just over the way from The Riverbank. I can absolutely see why you love them. I love them too & I don't care a jot that they are aimed at children. I hope we will get a Blu-Ray set of all episodes one of these days. I suspect you will be involved if so, at least I hope you will be. I keep coming back here to rewatch these videos, in fact I think they may be my favourite things on YT.

I thought that the reason the machine worked was because the weasel was operating it under the table? So I think it makes sense, I enjoyed this episode as it's a bit of a change and we get to see the group trick the weasels in return and get their own back a bit lol. Once again the props are so well made, I would love to know more about how they are made!

I have three DVDs including the 2000 release of the film, Season One and The Complete Collection from 2008. I prefer to watch the 1983 film on the 2000 release because it is loosely in its original format. I would love to see a video of your Animation career 👍 When I had the PT Video of Spring Follies, Paperchase was featured and not The Lost River. I prefer the PT cover of Summer Escapades as it is much more vibrant, artistic and Summery.
@bazbanter93296 ай бұрын
And again, apologies for such long winded comments, but I was disappointed by the BluRay release too. It's nice to have it on Bluray, but it seemed a bit of a scam. The DVD copies of the film from 2000 and the complete collection look sharper on my Bluray player and whilst the first 25 minutes look better (colour wise) on the restored edition, from the Wild Wood scene onwards til the end of the film, the colour and brightness have been really dulled, making the image quality harder to see from that point. Part of me thinks they purposely made the brightness darker for the Winter scenes to make it look more like it actually is Winter, but who knows...
@bazbanter93296 ай бұрын
Another great one, Richard. I collect the DVDs too, so I have almost all of these. I noticed a misprint on some of the PT seasonal tapes. It says 'Cosgrove Hall Productions 1998' instead of 88. I assume these tapes include the end credits to each episode now, seeing as the cut version of Yuletide Entertainment began with this version of Winter Tales. I found it annoying in the early 2000s that PT re-released ATOTT and the seasonal videos only on VHS. The film was available on DVD, so I found it baffling that the other WITW titles weren't. I have all 3 versions of the Four Seasons, and the carry cases for Spring, Summer and Autumn, but I haven't bothered to collect the individual Winter Tales due to Yuletide being edited. It annoys me so much. But I have the US version of Series 1 thankfully, so I can watch the full version on DVD. I agree, I adore the Time Life DVDs, any fan must have them. The restoration on them is beautiful and far superior to Fremantle's restoration on the film. And I also agree about the film's original DVD being far superior to the much more basic 2013 edition. When Series 1 came out on DVD in 2007, I have special memories as it was released the day after my 14th birthday and it was one of my gifts, but I did find the cover art odd too. Knowing it was Isambard etc. And I remember being annoyed on how long the CC took to be released and technically having to rebuy S1 and S2 to have the rest of the series on DVD too.

Thanks for the detailed comment! Yes, all agreed - and I meant to bring up 'The Yuletide Entertainment' being cut.
