But how to gain access to the bushing without removing entirely the cable?
@dieselgeekdotcom6 күн бұрын
You only need to gain access to the engine compartment end of the cable. Just remove the bolt securing the cable end to the front to back bracket on the selector shaft.

I have seen multiple recommendations for your kits and videos. Was wondering if you could answer a few questions for me, as I see the kits a bit cheaper elsewhere but am willing to pay a little more for 'good support'. 2013 Jetta 2.0 TDI Sportwagen with just over 130k miles on it. No issues with engine performacne, everything runs smooth and tight. Bought it from a dealership at 108k miles through the Volkswagen buyback program after the TDI 'fix'. Not knowing whether the belt has been replaced before so it is definitely time. I have replaced a timing chain, multiple water pumps, and even replaced a head gasket on a car before including all new valves (had a timing chain break in a Grand Am but got lucky to not have engine damage). Having moderate mechanical skills, but in not a mechanic. Is this something I can tackle in my own garage? What would you estimate for the amount of time required? Just some questions I have before I commit to the repair, or decide to take it to our local VW certified garage. Before I go all in, is this a job that can be done without a lift and do I need any specialty tools? If so do you have a link to a tool kit for it? Not looking for Snap On quality, just something sufficient to do it a few times without crumbling.

Hi Kevin - It sounds like you have more than enough wrenching experience to get this done. Generally if you know righty-tighty lefty-loosey, can/will follow instruction, have a jack, stands, and decent set of hand tools this won't be a problem. We cover all the necessary tools you'll need right at the beginning of the video and you get access moments after you order your kit. That allows you to pick up anything you're short on before taking your car apart. Most importantly if you get stuck you can always email or (gasp) call us if you run into a snag. Regarding specialty tools: You'll need the set we offer here: dieselgeek.com/collections/vw-tdi-timing-belt-kits/products/metalnerd-vw-common-rail-timing-belt-tool-kit Also an M10 triple square dieselgeek.com/collections/vw-tdi-timing-belt-kits/products/m10-triple-square-socket-for-common-rail-timing-belt-job And if you don't have a bunch of hose pinch pliers the cap plug set is a good idea. dieselgeek.com/collections/vw-tdi-timing-belt-kits/products/cap-plug-set-for-timing-belt-job

I'm putting together a list of parts/tools I will need before getting started - from watching your video I have so far: JB weld 2 part epoxy 8mm (5/16") drill bit 28.575mm (1 1/8") hole saw 2.38125mm (3/32") drill bit sandpaper for super pin card stock Am I missing anything?

Dental picks and necessary tools for console removal. We have a video on that.
For the airbag light btw, you can unhook the light piece itself so you can still drive without the trim in.

No, we do not offer a short shifter for MQ200. We do offer a high quality side to side bracket which elimates the poorly designed plastic bell crank and eliminates a ton of baked-in slop. dieselgeek.com/collections/vw-shifter-bushings/products/metal-side-to-side-reduction-bracket-for-mq200-only

Trying to find info on the reverse lockout mechanism for this shifter. I can go into reverse without pushing down so its easy to mistakenly enter 1st/reverse gears. Is this solved by taking out slop or is there a physical reverse lockout bushing/bracket part that I need to confirm is not damaged?
@dieselgeekdotcomАй бұрын
Lack of reverse lockout is usually a maladjusted side to side cable or bushing slop precluding a good adjustment.
@benjaminswile6807Ай бұрын
I have the same issue. The gear selection is fine but I no longer require to press down and select reverse. I saw from previous models there is a plastic plate that can break which I don't see in your video..... I see many videos about bushing replacement but not the lockout plate

Are you letting the eboxy set in 4-6 hours or cure in 15-24?
@dieselgeekdotcomАй бұрын
You need to let the epoxy fully cure. You really want that drill guide to be adhered securely so that you can center drill the pin to exactly 5/16.
@jimbz20Ай бұрын
And how long after can you drive the car with the epoxy going in the first gear getter?

My car all of a sudden won’t shift in to reverse. It’s as if something is holding it from slipping forward into the reverse gear. This is true at the gear stick and also when I try to manually select it at the gearbox it self. Any ideas? Is it internally in the gearbox itself or a shift mechanism issue?
@dieselgeekdotcomАй бұрын
You won't be able to shift into reverse from the selector shaft in the engine compartment with the cables connected because from there you have no way to overcome the reverse lockout in the cabin. We may be able to supply more specific information if you email us directly. Sales @ dieselgeek.com.

There is a rubber or plastic grommet that deformed at the base of my stick shifter, and it would not allow the shift to come back up. I could have shaved it down but I opted for a new shifter along with your kit. Shits solid now. I just uploaded my video a few minutes ago.

Sounds like you're talking about the old bushing. Ours replaced that to restore functionality without resorting to a bunch of new parts. And the material is significantly more rigid than stock for a better feel and a forever fix

This was not meant to be a comprehensive how-to. Generally there are 3 types of seals and we wanted to educate regarding best install practices. Replacement procedure and requisite tools are very much application specific. We recommend purchasing a 24 hour Erwin subscription for the very reasonable price $35.
