Criky! There's some serious money invested in that lot! I thought I was completely mad & over the top but this actually makes me look very sane. I have the FTDX10 as my home radio & the Icom 705 for portable. Both are fantastic radios. I would be interested to see more about what antennas Karl is using & how they are hooked up (ie what antenna goes to which radio & how it's all switched). Curious about the number of radios set up at the same time. Are some used for voice & others used for data? Or maybe he just likes collecting radios? Admittedly I've ended up with a bit of a collection over the years, although I don't have them all set up at the same time! Wondering if he has any measures in place to protect the front-end on the receivers of the radios when he's transmitting? I guess if he's only using 10 watts it probably isn't an issue? His passion for the hobby is obvious. Great to see someone getting so much enjoyment from this great hobby. Thanks to Karl & yourself for the shack tour.

He He, Yes he certainly loves radio a lot, I'm not a dedicated ham, I use 11mtr band but will eventually go for my m7 licence because he has been doing my head in to go for it...
@AmateurRadioUK Жыл бұрын
@@keith2599 I think it depends what you want to do. Some people are happy to stick with CB, others want the option of having more bands to play with. Having access to numerous ham bands does give you a hell of a lot more options, especially when propagation isn't playing ball on the higher frequencies around 10m/11m. From what I've heard the foundation licence is pretty easy & cheap to do. The same applies for the intermediate licence. I think it's worth doing if you are interested in radio. Especially as you can do it online now. I'll admit that the full licence was a completely different kettle of fish. I personally found that exam very hard. I did scrap through on my first attempt but only just! I'll qualify this by saying that I did all of my exams quite a few years ago (long before they started offering online exams) so my experience of taking the amateur radio licence exams is about 10 years out of date! Having said that, I did have a quick read through the updated study material not long ago & I don't think it's changed very much since I did it. They've just updated a few things & made the exam available online. If you already have a background in CB radio & understand the basic theory then a couple of evenings reading the study material & you should absolutely fly through......certainly on the foundation & (probably also the intermediate if you choose to go onto that). Personally I've never had much interest in CB. I've dabbled with it a couple of times but I found being limited to one band too restrictive. I do know of amateurs that operate on both ham & CB frequencies. As I said, it depends what you want to do. It's all radio at the end of the day!

How does he find the cobwebs
@keith2599 Жыл бұрын
The cobwebs are a great antenna system, especially if there at a good height
@AmateurRadioUK Жыл бұрын
I recently put up a cobweb antenna & I have been very impressed with it. I bought mine off of eBay from a radio amateur in Poland who makes & sells them. Realistically a cobweb is never going to beat a beam but most people in the UK don't have room for massive beams. As omnidirectional antennas go it works very well. With the limited space off my mid-terrace, I think its probably the best I'm going to get. The cobweb gets me on most of the upper bands. It covers 6, 10, 12, 15, 17 & 20. You can get them with an element for 40m too, but unfortunately that was just too big to fit in my garden. The bandwidth can be a little narrow on some bands, so you will have to choose between having it tuned for the data/CW part of the band, or the SSB part of the band. Having said that, you can "bully it into submission" it with a tuner. Mine is tuned for SSB but I can still run FT8 with the help of a tuner. It's quieter on receive than my last antenna which allows me to pick out some weaker stations which I likely wouldn't have been able to work on my previous antenna. Mine is currently on a mast at 6m above the ground. Once I fix the winch (which extends the mast), I'll be able to get that up to 12m. Will be interesting to see how much difference that height makes.

@@AmateurRadioUK thanks for that. I mate on the elecrafters channel in the uk is considering one I told him he better get it while the price is good. I’ve been looking at them from the USA for several years, although I have room for a beam, I’m lazy and then cost of rotators and my like of 12/17. Thanks for the good review. I'd like to pick up another. Just takes the edge off the noise. Another tip especially for USB is to reduce the hi cut on adjustable filters down to about 2400 hertz or say a low cut of 200 and a hi cut 2400 for a filter width of 2200 or 2.2. That will get rid of the hiss. 73
