In actuality, the stuff you offer has been really beneficial to us. Please answer this simple question for me: What is the proper thickness for the book cover? and book spine? thank you.

Don’t EVER soak paintbrushes especially overnight. It ruins them. The glue that holds them together will disintegrate and the brush will come apart. Use dish soap and water to clean straight away.

Is 'heat n bond' interfacing? I have so much interfacing at home and its iron-on where it bonds with heat, so is it the same thing? EDIT: okay, nope. This isn't quite that. But I got a very sturdy interfacing that I feel would remove the need for tissue paper, but does that work generally?

I am so happy to have found this video! I am debating on whether I should try to start bookbinding. I really want to, but I want to be sure what I'm getting into. Thank you for your easy-to-follow videos! Question: What machine do you use to make the cuts on the heat transfer vinyl? Cricut? Could you make a video that shows how you do that? Thank you in advance!!

I've seen other book binders say you shouldn't put the glue all the way to the edge of the block when casing in because it makes it harder to open the cover fully, but you don't seem to have that issue. Also how do you resist not opening the book and checking the end papers are smooth and flat once you glue them? I'd be tempted to take the bone folder to them and have seen others do that too!

I have a thing that is called something like „Glue Eraser“. It is basically a pretty hard type of gum with indents and it helped me in many cases to get rid of those unhappy glue accidents. Maybe you can google it and try it out although I think the success also depends of the kind of glue you are using. Good luck and greetings from Germany - Andrea ❤️

So incredibly helpful! I've been binding for a couple of years and have always had trouble with measurements of my casing. Everyone has always told me to make the width of my cover 3mm longer than the text block not smaller. Can't wait to try this method on my current project!

Really cool to see it slowly step by step and thank you for the measurements! I bound a few books in the past, but I always had the problem that one side of the endpapers lift up (or there is a whole between the first and second signature) if I open it because they seem to be too short :/ I used the standard measurements, added some back width for one book and subtracted for a second ... Still don't know why it happens. Has anyone an idea? ^^"

For getting rid of the glue: sand eraser may work (go gently as it's quite abrasive) or an 'adhesive eraser' - google will hopefully find it, but it's a sort of beigey looking square, feels kind of plasticky rather than rubbery like a conventional eraser. Glue: if you need to give yourself more time before it tacks down - look at adding wheat paste to your PVA. Have a look at DAS Bookbinding, he's in Australia too so will be able to recommend where to buy (if you can't buy from him) or failing that I know his YT channel has a how-to make wheat paste video. He def has videos talking about the different kinds of bookbinding glue, the differences between them, and when to use what, when to use mixes etc. One thing i didn't see you mention anywhere was grain - are you paying any attention to that in the materials that you add (e.g. your end papers, book boards etc.)? If not, I'd recommend it - it would make your books last longer. :) but thanks - bookbinding is such an addictive craft, its nice to see someone else sharing their passion for it!
@abound_bindery
@abound_bindery Ай бұрын
Such good tips!!! I use the correct grain where possible but since I’m often just binding for myself, I won’t throw it away or waste material just because of the grain direction 👍

@@abound_bindery fair enough - although its worth looking at what else you can make with the stuff. Have a look at JenOfEve - she has digital templates for making all kinds of things like boxes, drawers etc. and its mostly the same kind of stuff.

Is there a point in this process that you would recommend to do a sprayed edge? Rather than doing it after everything is complete?

I would do it straight after tearing the covers off! Clamp your book between 2 boards and then once it's dried, continue as normal (cover your boards in newspaper if you don't want them getting sprayed)
