My bold phidippus audax male jumping spider just past. Im planning on framing him. He was old when I bought him and lived in a 3x4 box. He spent his last 2 months in a 14 by 10 bioactive terrarium.

I got a wasp. It’s only a day old but it’s armoured & solid because it’s so hot here at the moment. It still creeped me out so I left it on the bench overnight, this morning I put it in a moisture chamber (then someone told me about freezing it) but now I’m wondering how I pop the pin through his super hard body.

Interesting video, I have never seen insects do such epic things before. I now notice that even Wasps are Aestheticaly Interesting creatures. They are so small, I always disregard them. And when I catch them to bring them outside they just sit in a glass and do nothing until I set them free. Last summer I fed a collapsed bee I found in my garden on a flower with honey-water, it seemed to recover and flew off a few minutes later. On a free and sunny springday morning, I may venture into the feilds and meadows, and look at the Insects on the Blooming plants. Though as now is winter, I may be content at seeing them in action on a screen. I do not condem these videos, as long as the insects are not mutilated by humans. Infact, these videos probably satisfy the curiosity of many people who would have been it not for videos such as these, engaged in messing with their local fauna in a negative way.

I have a praying mantis in my Freezer to put in the resin later. This is my first attempt at preserving an insect & I have no idea what I'm doing.... when pinning do the pins go in the legs or just around them & once pinned do they stay like that after drying or do I have to work quickly on working with the insect & how long do u leave the pins in
@InsectHunter2 ай бұрын
The pins do not go into the body, other than the one pin, penetrating the back of it. The other pens are just put in place to kind of keep the legs in the position you want and then once it hard it, it will stay in that position and remove all the pins other than the main pin. Does that make sense?
@BartholomewLongbottom2 ай бұрын
For anyone curious, it’s not Mantis. It’s a Mantidfly, they look similar but they’re not closely related. Vespamantoida wherleyi is a species of mantis that lives in the Amazon and mimics wasps. Not so much in color but in behavior.

I'm so late for this video, just a question, does preserving insects have hazardous risks cause they decay right? and how about its insides, won't the insect smell bad as it decays?
@InsectHunter2 ай бұрын
It will smell bad for a season but the bacteria and other microorganisms will die and all that will remain eventually is the outer shell. Most insects don’t have wide body parts as they are typically thin legs and generally thin bodies. For some more robust insects you must remove their innards and replace with cotton balls but only if you want to. They can often still dry fine.
@marklomibao38972 ай бұрын
@InsectHunter wooahh thanks for replying ♥️, any tips for a beetle pinning? I'm new to pinning, should I remove its insides? it's like a rhinoceros beetle. also should I buy those insects frame? or can I display it without a container?
@windymiller69082 ай бұрын
It is not necessary to kill all specimens for ID purposes. Buy yourself a reccommended good quality field guide....I prefer painted illustrations to photos. The vast majority of macro moths and many micros can be ID'd that way. Besides it's more fun than slicing some poor little creatures abdomen open. Afrter time you will be surprised how adept your ID skills become.
@InsectHunter2 ай бұрын
Yes, I understand, but I work for a research institution so there are certain parameters. I will typically follow, especially if I’m doing research because we need to have actual specimens. For almost all research you keep copies of specimens and save them.

arent fire bugs cannibals so they somehow break through other exo skelet? my question is how do they do that
@InsectHunter2 ай бұрын
I have never heard of this behavior, but I’ll have to do a little bit of research. I’m just basing my assumptions on seed bugs in general. I will do a little digging and if I hear otherwise I will let you know I could be wrong. If this does occur, it is very rare and not something that is common for sure. I have never seen cannibalization in this group in my life. I’ve seen these around quite frequently and never seen them eating each other. Only mating, and feeding on seeds
