Wow, am I envious ! You have so many outlanding options over there. I jokingly say I fly in the Bush, Rocks and Forest XC league here on Vancouver Island ( Canada) The narration is a nice touch to your video. What kind of a glider are you flying ?

Pffft... I was there once, flying a Slingsby Swallow mid 70s in March. Climbed to over 12,000', my feet turning into ice bricks, the cloud closed up below. Worried about hitting something solid if I descended, headed NW for a while where my next view through the clouds revealed nothing but grey water. I did a 180 and made it to land in a field just south of Peterhead. But I did enjoy this video, Thanks!

I presume you wait to retract the gear until the tow is complete in case you have to release the tow before it’s finished and find a landing spot in a hurry ?
@flystikerАй бұрын
You are correct, also to focus on the tow and not take your right hand off the stick to retract the gear as it could cause an upset. I think of ‘configuring the glider for flight’ once off the tow to make sure I am set up properly

That brings back memories. I only flew at Aboyne once, but managed to achieve my Diamond Height badge in superb wave. It was the same day that a couple of guys set a new UK altitude record in a 2-seater, climbing to some 30+ thousand feet. I haven't flown for some time now, so I imagine that record has since been broken, but it was an epic day.

Thank you for sharing happy memories. The last time I was there was in a Pirat 1970s. Before GPS and, on one occasion, launching from Portmoak, I got high in wave. The wind from the west was stronger than I calculated. The gaps below had closed in. Descending through the cloud, I was somewhat disconcerted to see nothing but sea. Fortunately, with plenty of altitude, ten minutes on a westerly heading brought the shoreline into view.

Happy memories. Creamy smooth wave. Every glider pilots dream. My gliding was pre GPS. It was essential to be very aware that the cloud could close in underneath. Making visual navigation a big challenge. It is possible to cover many miles and take a long time to descend from 15/17,000 ft.

Yes, you need the right wave lift conditions and people travel to mountainous areas to find it, but any glider is capable of these heights

Is there a world record for the longest flight in a glider?
@flystiker2 жыл бұрын
On days like this with a strong wind you can fly from dawn to dusk, but we usually fly for a few hours to make the most of the conditions on the day. The record is over 70 hours for a two seater and 56 hours for a single seater, set in the 1960’s.

Great site which brings back memories. I was in an ASW19 and climbed through 20,000 feet , the vario still at a steady 4 knots but pulled out because of an iced up canopy. I didn’t have a GPS then, so had to keep a careful watch on my position.

Thanks for your comment Julian, that sounds like a great flight you had. The advent of GPS has made a big difference, allowing us to go high without worrying about cloud filling in below and losing sight of the ground.

Nice work: how long did it take you? You also seemed to be relatively low, so well done. Given the flight length, what's your pee system for in-flight relief? A practical, but personal, question.
@flystiker3 жыл бұрын
Hi and thanks, the total flight was just over 4hrs 30 minutes, with the 300k done in 4hr 10mins, not very quick but safe 😁. For in flight relief I use a tube and bag which we buy from the British Gliding Association website, but I prefer to wait until after landing 😖😄
