Happy memories. Creamy smooth wave. Every glider pilots dream. My gliding was pre GPS. It was essential to be very aware that the cloud could close in underneath. Making visual navigation a big challenge. It is possible to cover many miles and take a long time to descend from 15/17,000 ft.

Incredible. I'm a paraglider pilot. I m not sure I would want to be as high as you are. So bumpy under the clouds. Amazing you found this lift.

The wave lift is incredibly smooth once you have found it, but can be turbulent in-between. Enjoy your paragliding, I flew hang gliders for many years before switching to gliders.

Great site which brings back memories. I was in an ASW19 and climbed through 20,000 feet , the vario still at a steady 4 knots but pulled out because of an iced up canopy. I didn’t have a GPS then, so had to keep a careful watch on my position.

Thanks for your comment Julian, that sounds like a great flight you had. The advent of GPS has made a big difference, allowing us to go high without worrying about cloud filling in below and losing sight of the ground.

Absolutely stunning recording. What was your maximum altitude ?
@flystiker Жыл бұрын
Thank you, max altitude was 10,800ft, we can occasionally reach over 20,000ft at this site, so we are always on the lookout for good conditions

Is there a world record for the longest flight in a glider?
@flystiker2 жыл бұрын
On days like this with a strong wind you can fly from dawn to dusk, but we usually fly for a few hours to make the most of the conditions on the day. The record is over 70 hours for a two seater and 56 hours for a single seater, set in the 1960’s.

@@flystiker 70 and 56 continuous hours?
@haraldschallerl29732 жыл бұрын
@@fromtheloveofjay271 The longest distance in a glider was flown by Klaus Ohlman (Germany) in Argentina 3008 km in about 15 hours. It was a wave-flight.

@@fromtheloveofjay271 yes, continuous hours, amazing endurance but that is not what pilots go for now, distance and height are the main targets
