Always wanted a Cobra 148 GTL-DX in the early eighties but they were too expensive. And anyone who had one couldn't really hide the fact they had an illegal SSB rig as the tinny rodger bleep slightly off frequency sound gave it away. 🙂

I was up on Ashers Beacon a local DX perch last week with a few friends and I gave a call out on Channel 19 and I said QSY to channel 40 and this guy called Chris from Northern Scotland came back to me and at first he was only 5-6 to me and as we were talking his signal went up to around 5-9+60 full scale and he said that he had a dodgy antenna and the SWR was out but still he was absolutely hammering in to the Beacons and loads of other people joined in but they couldn't even hear Chris in Scotland near Glasgow but it was a fantastic contact and that day the 11 meters UK FM was wide open and some of the other contacts I got was just unbelievable on the CB radio just on the FM and I was using a Kenwood TS-50 HF amateur radio at the time speaking to Chris it was absolutely fantastic the other day up on the Beacons and I just hope that I can go again very soon with my mate mobile again very soon hopefully so anyway that's what happened and I just wanted to tell you about it all because you've spoken to Scotland like myself the other day. @@martindavies6640 Thanks for the reply. They are great looking radios. Yes I know what you mean about it being like the wild west out there. Anytone version of the cobra 148
@martindavies66404 ай бұрын
The anytone Ares 2 is a lovely radio, i own a cobra 148gtldx Mark 2 made in 1981, but it's over 41 year's old, And if you look on eBay they sell for ridiculously stupid prices, the Ares 2 is a modern take on a old classic it can cover from 24 MHz through to 29 MHz also CB radio, is stable so doesn't drift, there are many more positives about this radio, you can also buy it for under £200 pounds, unlike some old cobra 148gtldxes, that go from silly price's like £300 And upto £400 pounds, i rest my case.

But it's doing a good job even low down, 😊. Been experimenting with some of my CB radios with standard 4 watts FM and 10 to 12 Watts ssb, using legal UK frequcies, to prove you don't need huge amounts of power to get out.
