I've grown corn for the last 2 years. A couple of things they need are a lot of fertilizer, at least weekly. They also need a ton of water. I learned the hard way that you don't want to plant them too close to thirsty plants or trees (in my case, fig trees) I would not use a grow bag next time. The roots just get too hot and it's too hard to keep wet. I'm in your same climate and in ground I watered them 2xs daily, early morning and again in evening. They did produce pretty good but I probably won't continue to grow it just because it's so easy to find good corn in the grocery store and I wasn't saving any money because of the cost of watering them. It was a good experience and that's what gardening is all about.
@WendysGardenJourney2 ай бұрын
Thank you for the great info.😊 I will probably try again, using your advice, just for the fun of it. But I agree, there is always good corn 🌽at the grocery store.

How much sun does it get in this spot? I’m also zone 9b and would love one in my garden
@WendysGardenJourney2 ай бұрын
It gets morning sun until about noon. Then it is shaded the rest of the day. This is its second location, it started in a spot that got sun until 2 or 3pm, but it kept getting burned so I moved it to this spot within the first year.
@GreenGranny2 ай бұрын
I'ver been afraid to try hydrangeas because of their heat intolerance. It looks like it's growing in part shade. Do you know how many hours of sun it gets in the summer?
@WendysGardenJourney2 ай бұрын
In the peak of summer, it gets sun from about 6:30am until around noon. The lemon tree provides some morning protection and then it is shaded by the house the rest of the day. The only other time it is hit by sun is the late afternoon reflection off my neighbors window. Honestly, I am not sure I would buy a hydrangea again. They need a lot of water to stay looking nice.

How do you keep your peach trees from being crabby and dramatic? I live in Florida and bought a tree literally made for Florida "Florida king" and it just seems to hate everyone and everything! My orange tree and cherry trees are all happy but the peach threatens to die at least once a week!
@WendysGardenJourney2 ай бұрын
I am not an expert, but you might want to try again, particularly if you see healthy ones in your areas. It is hard to say why certain trees do well and others to not. I have replaced several fruit trees over the last few years. I started with 2 peach trees 🍑and I lost one within the year. I got the Aprium to replace it, but I am unsure of how healthy it is as I cut out what I think was fire blight in spring. I am on my 3rd try for the Fuyu persimmon. This one made it through the summer, so my fingers are crossed that this will make it. Good luck with your tree, they are awesome when they work out. 😄

I love that Chinese Pistashe but I'm worried about how to water and how much when establishing. I don't have drip. Any advice? I live north of you with the same hot dry climate.
@WendysGardenJourney3 ай бұрын
I used 3 gallon jugs each with a small hole near the bottom when I first planted the tree. I would place them around the drip line of the tree one or two days a week. In the first year, I think I filled each bottle two times at each watering. So the tree got about 6 gallons of water each time. As it got bigger I moved the bottles around a bit more and watered the same amount. Once I got the drip installed I continued to try and deep water using the gallon jugs since the drip is mainly for the other plants. I have also heard of people using a home depot or lowes 5 gallon bucket (with a small hole) to water as well. Just depends on the the type of soil you have and how hot it is. Hope that helped. Good luck with your tree😊
@GreenGranny3 ай бұрын
@WendysGardenJourney That really did help, thank you! Since it is so hot and dry, watering is my number one issue. I have native plants too and the rules are different for them. It's confusing when first learning gardening so your info is much appreciated!

Good question. 😊 I assumed that if left, it would mature and drop its seeds, and then new tubers would grow. Similar to when you grow dahlias from seed. I cut it off since I have more than enough tubers going in my garden now.
