Today I am going to attempt to prune my Pretty in Pink Eden Climbing Rose.
I attended a climbing rose pruning workshop with the Sierra Foothills Rose Society. They did an amazing job with the class and I am grateful that I was able to attend. sierrafoothills...
Below are the steps and tips provided at the workshop.
*Remove ties so you can pull the canes off of the arbor.
*Don’t weave the canes into the arbor. It can damage them and it makes it more difficult to prune.
*If the plant hasn’t dropped its leaves, remove them so you can see the plant’s structure.
*When pruning get rid of dead, dying, and diseased growth in addition to twiggy and unproductive growth. You can also get rid of ugly canes, if they bother you.
*The number of canes growing from the base is personal preference.
*Use flat cuts instead of angled cuts as they have found that the wounds heal faster.
*As your plant ages, identify the canes you want to become the new main canes, so you are ready when it is time to remove canes that are 5 or more years old.
*Purple canes are the newest growth and tend to be the most flexible. Green canes are slightly older and will be more rigid. Brown canes are the oldest and are generally inflxible.
*Don’t worry about crossing canes, it isn't a fruit tree.
*Flowers form on lateral (horizontal) canes. The best way to create lateral canes, on an arbor, is it to snake the canes in an “S” pattern up the arbor.
*Consider using jute twine to tie your rose to the arbor.
*Cut any remaining lateral growth down to 2 to 5 inches, just below a bud.
*For longer canes, cut just above a bud. The plant will start by send sugar to the furthest point to promote growth.
If your plant produces an unexpected red flower, that it probably came from the root stock and the entire cane can be removed.
