Fantastic work, Lori! Love the imagery, love the song. You got some amazing captures of the storms kicking up dust in this video. And I recognized a few of those storms like the ones from Vekol, from the bridge and that one late in the season over the mountain just south of the freeway. I can hardly wait to see the entire thing when you're finished. In the meantime, tease me all you please, because I can't get enough of your work!

Monsoon clearing the way for Linda Ronstadt's "I AM BORN" moment The first and longest chapter in the singer’s book is titled “Tucson.” The narrative starts with Ronstadt’s father driving badly flooded streets to get her mother to the hospital one rainy summer day in 1946. It’s her “I am born” moment. And from there, she goes on to describe a childhood that found her surrounded by music and people who knew how to make it.

Microbursts are pretty Dangerous. It could have been a lot worse. To be honest, though this looks like a dry or hybrid Microburst. Dry can still have precipitation. But wet microbursts are usually fueled when precipitation coalesces fast enough to drop the temperature inside the storm pocket drastically. And when mixed in hot weather... well. Leaving visibility almost zero in some cases.

Hi Lori, I didn't know you until today. I'm writing to you from Italy, and I'm a lightning and storm enthusiast. I've always shot by holding the timer in my hand and then closing it as soon as I saw the lightning, or by doing a burst every 5-10 seconds, but as you say, it's a waste of shots for the shutter. You talk about time lapse for the night, do you think it's better? I now have a Fuji xt-5 and I wanted to try one of these triggers, I don't need the other functions. just make flashes, and that it's the best. I was thinking of trying the Bug, because it seems more robust and waterproof. Do you ever leave your reflex cameras in a storm? Or do you use a cover? I'm afraid that with a sheet over it, the Bug will be less sensitive or won't work. I don't know if you can leave it under water. Anyway, I'll watch your videos, because you're great! and you explain very well. Maybe, hold the objects a little more still, when you describe them, to better understand the details. Bye!

Thank you for this! I have the Lightning Bug, not the Plus. Love the Mark IV, but today they did almost the same number of shots and captured the same bolt. Often it is the case that the Mark IV seems to do better.

It was interesting to hear what settings you use. You may have done this already. Can you show how you plan where you are you are going to chase for storms and bolts? Also one on how to safely chase storms and bolts? You and other Tucson storm chasers make me want to come to Tucson and try my hand at it. I'm from Honolulu. ThAnks for doing this video!

Great comparison of these devices. I bought the original Lightning Bug from B and H in June 2018. I was fascinated with capturing daytime lightning. It took me a while using a trigger and yes a ND filter as I found success came from turning up the units sensitivity but also having a shutter speed of 1/15 s or longer. Then I discovered that MK controls had introduced the Lightning Bug Plus and I purchased one, again from B and H. The plus model can now accept firmware updates from MK Controls. They also offer to users of the original Lightning Bug, send it back to them and for half the cost of a new one, the will upgrade the old model to the new Plus model as the new housing is identical to the old one externally. Everything else is changed out. So now I have 2 of the Plus models. Works great. The only minor issue is for users to really ensure that the cover to the battery compartment is securely in place. Not a design flaw, more user error. I really like this product.

I do the same thing by zooming into a particular area in the scene knowing damn well that your chances are slim to none that a bolt is actually going to land there. But I usually wait until I have several good bolts in my current composition before rolling the dice on a long shot. How many bolts do you need in a picture with the exact same composition anyway? Might as well spin the wheel on a long shot because sometimes you get lucky! You'll have to tell me the hit by lightning story some day. Color me intrigued. I've had them hit near by, but so far dodged the bullet. (knock on wood)

A+ to both of you on the 30: to 35: conversation... I chased a LOT between 1996 and 2001, but really got spooked on 5/3/99 and then also again 2000 when a chase partner of mine died chasing. Learning lessons and being really scared is why I've held back all these years. 2024 is getting me more excited than I've been since 2013 BUT I don't think I'll ever break the cardinal rules of last-century chasing: Don't chase alone. Don't chase at night. Don't EVER go into the water. And no zero metering (like who EVER would have thought of THAT before?!?! omg)

I really resonate with everything you said, Jen! I've gone through it all. And still do. I love chasing, but it's overwhelming at times and it's necessary to take a step back and reset, or change focus completely. It's hard to find that balance sometimes. And thanks for the shoutout!

Great video! In particular, I loved the part of the discussion about not getting too close/being too aggressive from 29:30 to 37:00 into the video. As a parent of a young teenager that loves meteorology and storm chasing, it’s critical to instill this mindset both by example when in the field and by hearing from others who operate with the same mindset regarding caution/responsibility. Thank you both! ❤

best we can do is learn vicariously from others and learn from our own mistakes. I do hope we see a push for safety, but sadly I see more people being more aggressive.

Good conversation. its OK to sit out setups! Theres a skill in being able to get the goods on fewer chases by honing in on what setups are more likely to produce them.

I too, was touched by lightning. I had been 2 years recovery from back-2-back major concussions, when I was touched. Half way down the Grand Canyon on the Tanner Trail...Total shock and I wasn't sure except for the toasty bacon on my right ear where the last bead of sweat was. The Tonto layer gets hit so much and around the Tanner seems to get it a lot. Years later I was camping at Toroweap and bolts were blasting...I ran petrified to the car...later realizing my camera was in the car...30 sec exposures and I was hooked. I went years without getting a trigger and my first never got a shoot when I got daytime ones manually! Now I have way too big ofa collection of Lightning Bugs, Lightning Triggers and Miops firmware 3+

So the lightning added another 4 years of recovery...and some funny memory lost moments.
