I hope you do end up making one, they're fun. Whatever you do, make sure all your inclusions are bone dry or they will eventually break down and become moldy or ugly. For the tiny mushrooms, I just grab some enoki mushrooms (long skinny white shroomies) from the supermarket and dry them out on a window screen with a fan. I have watched many videos on this subject, I was a machinist and understand tools but am trying to learn more in the jewelry business You are one of few that uses your tools correctly. Too many You Tube Vid's demonstrate how NOT to correctly use a tool. You can obviously teach techniques and proper tool use as demonstrated, and I learned today. Thank you so much

I really appreciate your approach to not having certain tools. I have all you listed BUT so many makers do a disservice the craft by not showing or at lest telling people there are other ways. I do understand in some cases you have to have the tool but as they say, “there are more ways to skin a cat”. Never understood that. Who would want to skin a cat?

Just a little tip Oliver. When fitting a blade to a handle, you can heat the end to be inserted and burn a slot in by just pushing the red hot metal into the wood. So you don't mess with the tempering of the blade, do this before the final heat treatment. The blade should stay in the handle, but I always ad epoxy to the hole before final placement. This is how I put handles onto files, awls, and other tools.

Good tips, thanks!

Oliver I am a woodworker and you were recommended to me so I gave you a shot. Boy, am I glad that I did! I have been looking for a way to make my own engraver to add something different to the pieces I build. I love using metals with wood and I have a special jewelry box coming up and thought that before I buy the plate from an artist engraver friend of mine, I would try it for myself. Well, I will still buy the plate. Afterall she is the proffessional engraver and it will take a long time, if ever, before I am comfortable enough with a plate that I engraved to put it on a piece I have made. But, I love learning something knew and after 50 years of woodworking, this old gal could use a change. I have everything to make the handle and forge a blade, but you were so charming and funny,(and right) that not everyone has a shop full of tools, so I am going to do exactly what you did. It looks like a lot of fun and I'm always up for a challenge. I'm VERY interested in how you made the vise, so that will come first. Count me in as a new subscriber! Best of luck in all of your endeavors.
