Oliver I am a woodworker and you were recommended to me so I gave you a shot. Boy, am I glad that I did! I have been looking for a way to make my own engraver to add something different to the pieces I build. I love using metals with wood and I have a special jewelry box coming up and thought that before I buy the plate from an artist engraver friend of mine, I would try it for myself. Well, I will still buy the plate. Afterall she is the proffessional engraver and it will take a long time, if ever, before I am comfortable enough with a plate that I engraved to put it on a piece I have made. But, I love learning something knew and after 50 years of woodworking, this old gal could use a change. I have everything to make the handle and forge a blade, but you were so charming and funny,(and right) that not everyone has a shop full of tools, so I am going to do exactly what you did. It looks like a lot of fun and I'm always up for a challenge. I'm VERY interested in how you made the vise, so that will come first. Count me in as a new subscriber! Best of luck in all of your endeavors.

Just a little tip Oliver. When fitting a blade to a handle, you can heat the end to be inserted and burn a slot in by just pushing the red hot metal into the wood. So you don't mess with the tempering of the blade, do this before the final heat treatment. The blade should stay in the handle, but I always ad epoxy to the hole before final placement. This is how I put handles onto files, awls, and other tools.

Ah, thank you i use an old lipstick ( donated by Daughter ! ) & for polishing the graver i find diamond emery boards from the Ladies shop ideal. For metal to make the graving tools I use lathe tools, or all hard hacksaw blades .These are not as hard as lathe tools but if nothing else... Annealing,-- if you obtain a piece of steel say 6 mm thick by 100mm long heat to dull red then place the tool on the steel & watch the color. When the correct color is reached quench in oil or water -- vertical ( or the steel tool can bend ) hope this is of interest.

3:04 lol at that point, I'd just put it in a power drill (the one with the adjustable three pronged chuck) and sand it that way. 3:54 also, if youre wondering if you properly annealed the piece of steel, properly annealed high carbon steel with file easily (like in the video) improperly annealed high carbon steel, where it either didn't get hot enough or it cooled too quickly, will still be *hard* and the file will most likely just skate across the surface of the metal without really doing anything. I don't know if there's a video about annealing on this channel or not, but there are plenty elsewhere on youtube.

Amazeballs work on that graver btw . Couple of quasi questions regarding my limited knowledge of tempering steel and not meant as a troll. Doesn't heating it with a torch took it turns the color you want only case harden the steel (aka only harden the outside surface and doesn't penetrate the temper all the way through the blade). To properly temper the steel it should be heated in something like a toaster oven for a couple of hours at the temperature you're wanting at least once if not twice? Or does that not apply when the steel is so small and thin to begin with? And if you're torch tempering then it's better to start heating the blade behind the tip and gradually playing the flame towards the tip and removing the heat when it's close to the tip so as not to overheat the tip which is thinner. If done properly you'll see the color glide up to the end after you've removed the heat.
