This remains arguably the finest actual recording of the famous instrument to date. It caught every aspect of the massive instrument superbly -including the west Royal Trumpets - yet the reproduced sound is immediately recognisable as this organ actually sounded back then within its unique but notoriously difficult acoustic. A really superb production! I have been fortunate to have the cd amongst my collection from the day it was released. My copy is actually signed by Andrew Lucas as I was a regular attendee at St Paul's during the glorious John Scott/Andrew Lucas era. I also bought several copies at that time to give as Christmas gifts that year.

Having grown up with a Moller pipe organ in my home in the 1940s, spending some time with this instrument is most definitely on my life's bucket list. If I suffered a heart attack and died there it was be worth it.

Unfortunately, Haydn House is now out of business, most likely due to a "cease-and-desist" letter from one or more major record labels, even though many of the recordings involved had been out-of-print for a number of years!

As with organs throughout the world, one plays the building acoustic, not the organ. Its echoes must be taken into account and the music tempo altered accordingly for the full effect of the piece to "come off"......soft .....or...loud.. I played this remarkable instrument in the 1990's; as a guest of the British Organ Society. I shall ever remember the occasion. Chris Thors-Smith Australia..

As nice an instrument as the new Dobson is, it cannot compare with this. All ducks were in a row here. Organ, organist, recording company combined with a rational period in the history of America yielded this aesthetic experience for me. I performed the Salve Regina on that very instrument exactly 22 years later (mid-October of 1979). It has been a staple in my musical diet for years. A prayer back to God 🙏 Who gave it.

This was absolutely during Easter Sunday Mass 1989. They have the live version of Yves Devernay playing this Improvisation on Pierre Cochereau's Console.

Professional jealousy should never taint the halls of a place of worship, especially within one of the world's greatest. The Authorities of Notre Dame knew exactly what and who they wanted; the position was offered and accepted. Their business. END OF ARGUMENT. The naysayers were not true men of God because they didn't "suck it up and get on with their own lives".

For those who don't care for Vierne's Carillon de Westminster, I suggest they give Henri Mulet's Carillon a listen. It's more spritely than Viernes' piece (imho).Andreas Meisner's performance is a good introduction to those who haven't heard Cavaille-Colls' 1890 masterpiece instrument.

magnifique.

EQUALIZER Modifikation 'Caruso EQ Referenz' (Exakte Einstellung!) ©2023 HL, Germany. -10,8 dB (60Hz) -12,3 dB (230Hz) -15,0 dB (910Hz) -15,0 dB (4kHz) +15,0 dB (14kHz) Der Eintrag wird ergänzt, weil es sehr unterschiedliche EQ gibt. Some corrections- the organ cost $100,000 to build. Also, the organ only takes up the front 1/3 of the grille with the Echo division speaking down through a tone chute at the rear.

here from Cesar Franck. thank you for introducing me to the beautiful world of organ music and for reinvigorating my love of listening. i didn’t expect to sit and listen to every piece you linked, but i did. and i was astounded when i heard how much of an orchestra an organ really is. an entire symphony in one instrument. through you, this deep swelling has truly touched, grasped my soul in a way i cannot describe. it’s entirely new but calls upon so many experiences from my past of piano playing, exemplified in a new light. it’s so wonderful to let yourself get wrapped up in the beauty of something, and I cannot thank you enough for reawakening this idea in me. i found myself playing along with this piece in my head, despite having never heard it before. being utterly carried away by the melody. what a wondrous moment that i will treasure forever - thanks to your introduction. the way i view music itself, an art so dear to me I’m near tears at the thought of it, has been cast with an additionally suddenly new and quite welcome way. from the depths of my heart and my soul, i thank you and this organist who’s revived something i couldn’t quite place my finger on, this thing i lost but have now found. know that, somewhere, you’ve touched someone named Lou who is forever grateful to you from the bottom of his heart.

Bought the Vinyl LP in early 70s in Washington DC. Got the score from Pittsburgh, Listened to it 1000 times, took me maybe 4 years to learn to play it. Both my Organ teachers said they never heard of this piece. It is hard as hell to play. My doctoral professor said: "I thought it would never end" Double Fugue. My favorite piece of music.

My favorite recordings that he did at St. Sulpice were the Franck's works that were on Volume 3 with the Grandé Piéce Symphonique, Pastorale and the Fantasie in A (which is my all-time fave) and the three chorales with Piéce Heroique at the Aeolian-Skinner at St. Thomas' church in NYC. This GORGEOUS piece was on volume 2, the Lamento being my fave of the album, all recorded between 1956 to 59. Love his performances in these! SUBLIME!

Very nice recording. Sounds are clear. When I've heard it in person the sound seemed garbled and unclear. May have just been the guest organists that were unfamiliar with how to register in such a large cathedral with so much reverb.
